St. Mauritius in Moritzing is a South Tyrolean church in Gries , a district of Bozen . The church is located on a slightly elevated valley edge in Moritzing opposite the Bolzano regional hospital .

The church was first mentioned in 1242 in the register of the Bolzano notary Jakob Haas as "ecclesia sancti Maurici" . In 1427 the German name "zu sand Mauricien" is attested. The older names for the Ortsried Moritzing, which are no longer available today, were Russan and Haimgarten .

The choir tower , which was rebuilt around 1656 with arched sound windows and octagonal pointed helmet, as well as the attached round apse, date from around 1300 . The church interior is an artfully varied octagonal building with an oblong interior, an octagonal flat dome and a square portal. It was built in 1736 by the master builder Josef Delai and consecrated in 1738.

On the tower there is a wall painting of St. Christoph , made by the so-called Bolzano master around 1380. In the apse there are frescoes from the same time with the Man of Sorrows between Mary and John, six apostles and the remains of a fur hanging on the base. Further apostles, saints and a starry sky have been preserved in the former nave , which are attributed to the master of the urban legend of the Bolzano Marian parish church and date from around 1370/80.

From the years 1596 to 1807, 72 account books of St. Mauritius have come down to us in the Bolzano city archive (Hss. 1003-1075), which were kept by the respective church princes .

The church was listed as a historical monument in 1977 .
