Evangelical Church of St. Nicholas in Gefell

The Protestant village church Nikolaus is in the Gefell district of the Föritztal community in the Sonneberg district in Thuringia .

history

A predecessor chapel is said to have existed in the 11th century . Century got its present form through extensions.

The chancel was vaulted in the 16th century and the churchyard was surrounded by a defensive wall with gate tower and battlement . The altar and baptismal font were also created at this time . In the Thirty Years' War almost the whole place was destroyed except for the fortified church, which was only damaged. The village and the church were rebuilt in the second half of the 17th century. The interior construction is based on the model of the mother church from Mupperg . The painting of the gallery is missing. A mural depicts the parable of the fourfold arable field .

In 1745 the current church tower was built with an onion shape. The new mansard roof enabled the installation of a second gallery .

The church had two bells before the Thirty Years War . These were outsourced for security, but stolen in the "safe place". In 1740 a new bell was procured and two more bells were added in 1850. During the First World War the bronze bells were melted down; 1968 new bells cast in Apolda .

In 1761 the first organ was procured. The current organ from 1800 comes from Franconia . The tower clock dates from 1670; Today there is a radio clock in the church building .
