Steeple

St. Otmar is the Catholic parish church of Akams , a district of Immenstadt im Allgäu in the Oberallgäu district in Bavaria . The building is a listed building .

history

Akams was first listed in the directory of the parishes of the Diocese of Constance in 1275, at that time under the name Machalms. In 1291 it was referred to as Macabus, in 1354 as Makalmz, in 1451 it was written as Achalms and in the 16th century as Makams. The parishes on the left of the Iller belonged to this diocese until 1821, then to the diocese of Augsburg .

St. Otmar is essentially a late Gothic building from the 15th century. The church was rebuilt in 1782 and received a new roof structure. In the years 1876 and 1890 to 1894 it was restored and almost completely refurbished. The wooden steeple on the west side of the church was replaced in 1898 by a massive tower with a pointed roof on the south side of the choir . Its upper floor, however, was again made of wood and originally clad with sheet metal. It's shingled now.

As a result of this redesign, the side walls of the sign could be bricked up in accordance with the nave in 1900 . The old west wall was raised as a gable wall and the roof was extended to the west. This resulted in a larger space for the gallery above the sign, on which an organ by Julius Schwarzbauer from Mindelheim has been located since 1910 .

In 1978 the outside of the church was repaired. The roof was re-covered. The tower was removed, the wooden structure partially renewed, the tower was newly shingled and finally put back on with a mobile crane. Between 1979 and 1980 the interior of the church was renovated and a new heating system installed. A structural damage meant that in 1980 the organ had to be dismantled and rebuilt. In 2009 the outside of the church was renovated again. The roof structure was treated to prevent worm infestation, the facade was repainted and the tower and the west side were newly shingled. Drainage was installed on the south side of the church and the entrance podium to the sacristy was renewed. A general overhaul of the organ took place in 2010, in the course of which the front pipes were also replaced.

Furnishing

altar

The church has been equipped with three neo-renaissance altars by Wilhelm Engel from Babenhausen since 1894 . On the high altar , the figure of the church patron St. Otmar is flanked by the figures of St. Aloisius and St. Francis. The altar was converted into a people's altar in 1975. The left side altar is decorated with figures of St. Joseph, St. Sebastian and St. Anthony of Padua, the right side altar shows Mary as Queen of Heaven between St. Anna and St. Joachim.

In the choir there are two figures from the late 16th century, which were revised and recast in the 19th century. They represent St. Lawrence and St. New Year's.

On the walls of the ship there is a holy guardian angel and a figure of St. John the Baptist, which was made towards the end of the 18th century. The walls are adorned with 14 stations of the cross, which are worked as a high relief and provided with gabled profile frames.

The Mother of God on the globe with the snake and Saint Joseph with the child can be seen on carrying bars in the corridor.

pulpit

The pulpit dates from 1780. Originally marbled in the Baroque style, it was painted brown in 1894. The semicircular basket has carved decorations in its three fields, consisting of open books, bows and branches. The dove of the Holy Spirit is on the underside of the sound cover. In the 19th century the volute crown was provided with a cross.

The font was created by Anton Immler, a stone carver from Wollmuths , in 1801. The basin is round and ribbed in the shape of a shell. It bears a legend that indicates the year of origin and the pastor Josef Anton Pabst.

In the middle of the nave there is a fresco showing Mary as the queen of heaven above the village of Akams. The signature indicates Xaver Mayr as the painter and 1876 as the year of creation; the picture shows the church with its old tower. The fresco on the ceiling of the choir with the motif "Christ the King" comes from August Braun from Wangen and was created in 1926.

Three pictures on the gallery parapet refer to the life of the church patron. On the left you can see the arrest and kidnapping of St. Otmar, in the middle his death and redemption in prison, on the right the feeding of the poor and lepers. Alemanne Otmar, founder abbot of the St. Gallen Monastery , founded the first home for lepers in Switzerland. Captured, humiliated and banished by Franconian counts, against whom he revolted, he died on the island of Werd near Stein am Rhein in 759. His body was later transferred to St. Gallen.
