August Braun (church painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August Braun (born May 16, 1876 in Wangen im Allgäu ; † April 8, 1956 there ) was a church painter from Wangen im Allgäu.

Life

August Braun was born in 1876 as the youngest of thirteen children of the doctor Josef Braun in Wangen . After graduating from high school , he studied at the Munich Art Academy . His teachers were Gebhard Fugel and Karl Kasper. During his studies in Munich, Braun was friends with Hermann Anton Bantle , Franz Martin, the restorer Baur and A. Pfeffer from Rottenburg . In 1898 a study interruption of several months followed in order to study in Leipzig . The painter spent the entire year 1899 in Paris to further his education . In Munich he became a student of the well-known animal painter Heinrich von Zügel . In 1908 he finished his studies and was a freelance artist until 1914 .

Meanwhile Braun, like other artists of his time, had formed an artist group; The fresco painter and illustrator worked, among other things, in Berlin in an artist community in the "Atelier Ernst Neumann", which belonged to Ernst Neumann (1871–1954), who worked there as a painter and commercial artist .

From 1914 Braun took part in the First World War. From 1918 he lived again in his hometown Wangen im Allgäu. Modest, apolitical, not belonging to any political party, he always went to early mass in the morning . He died in 1956 and was buried in the family grave of the Braun family in the Wangen cemetery .

The church painter Josef Braun (1903–1965) was his nephew, and they often worked together.

Works

There are 50 paintings by August Braun in secular and ecclesiastical buildings in Upper Swabia and the Allgäu . He was influenced by Fugel, the new objectivity and Otto Dix . His wall and ceiling paintings fit into the historical interiors or ensembles through a comparatively traditional painting style. That they were painted in the 20th century is more evident in the details. For example, people in the procession wear modern street suits (Eriskirch) or personalities from contemporary history are depicted or indicated (Rötenbach, three popes in Zeil). The paintings created at the same time in Eriskirch in 1933 clearly show the different stylistic handwriting of August Braun (ceiling) and Josef Braun (choir wall). The less modern gesture of August Braun is probably not to be understood as ignorance or inability (for example, a drawing shows Christ cleaning the temple in the folds of the garment and the dealers almost cubist forms), but as a conscious withdrawal. On the one hand he became the “best baroque painter of our time”, and on the other hand he was less exposed to the accusation of “degenerate art” than his nephew.
