St. Pankratius in Burgdorf

St. Pankratius is the Evangelical Lutheran main church in Burgdorf . It was built in 1813 in the classical style.

history

There were several previous buildings on the site of today's church. The earliest written reference dates back to the 13th century, but the suggested Pancras - patronage to an even earlier origin. Presumably in the Kleine Hildesheim collegiate feud (1420–1422) the Romanesque church from which the baptismal font originates was destroyed. The Gothic successor building, which had only a wooden bell tower, went down in the great city fire of 1809. The new building was completed under Superintendent Johann Heinrich Heinrichs .

The Burgdorf Church has been Evangelical-Lutheran since 1526.

Initially 21 villages belonged to the Pankratius Church, in 1624 there were twelve according to the chronicle of the then superintendent Fathschildt. Philipp Spitta died in 1859 as Superintendent of Burgdorf. Today there are 9,000 parishioners in the Pankratius parish.

Building description

inside view

The massive rectangular tower with a high lantern in the west is followed by the reddish plastered hall church with a transept-like entrance hall in the south and a detached altar area in the east. The arched windows of the nave occupy the entire height of the building and are framed in white. White moldings with square cross struts also mark the corners. Above the portals, Latin scriptures urge devotion and righteousness.

The interior shows the character of a sermon church . The white column structure of the pulpit altar wall with golden decorative elements (renewed in 1956) and the light brown surrounding gallery with pillars on the ground floor, columns on the upper floor and dark brown ornaments on the railing are made of wood in classicist shapes. The oldest piece of equipment is the Romanesque sandstone baptism (copy; original in the Landesmuseum Hannover ), the youngest of the intercession candlesticks by Hilko Schomerus . The picture of the Last Supper above the altar was created by Carl Wiederhold in 1900.

organ

Organ brochure from 1585

The organ was built in 1965/66 by the Hillebrand (Isernhagen) organ building company in the listed organ case by Hans Scherer the Elder . The disposition is based on an instrument from 1585, which was in the church, but was lost over time due to renovations. The instrument has 31  registers (approx. 1800 pipes ) on three manuals and a pedal . The actions are mechanical.

Bells

The big bell of love hangs in the middle compartment of the belfry. The bells were created by the Burgdorf artist Hilko Schomerus.

Four bells hang in the wooden belfry of the belfry . In 2009, the Bachert bell foundry in Karlsruhe cast three bells, the missing and damaged two chilled cast iron bells (f 1 , 1470 mm Ø and g 1 , 1270 mm Ø) and the one cast steel bell (h 0 , 1810 mm Ø, behind the church turned off) replace; the older bell from 1815 was renovated by the Lachenmeyer company in Nördlingen. The new bells on the Wolm bear the following inscriptions in capital letters :

  • Bell 1: NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD. JUSTICE AND PEACE WILL KISS.
  • Bell 2: DON'T FEAR, JUST BELIEVE! I CAN JUMP OVER WALLS WITH MY GOD.
  • Bell 4: GOD WILL WIPE ALL THE TEARS FROM YOUR EYES AND DEATH WILL NO LONGER BE. JOY FOR YOUR NAMES IS WRITTEN IN HEAVEN.

Two clock- striking bells are hung rigidly in the tower lantern; the quarter-hour bell is the oldest existing bell in the church.

The ringing order stipulates that all four bells should ring at all times only for higher holidays. On smaller festive days such as Maundy Thursday , Old Year's Eve and Eternity Sunday, the three big bells ring out (a 0 –d 1 –e 1 ). In contrast, the D major sixth fourth chord (a 0 –d 1 –f sharp 1 ) is used on the Sundays after Easter and after Christmas and for Thanksgiving . On Ash Wednesday , on the Sundays of the Passion and Advent season and on the day of penance and prayer , the solemn duet of the two lowest pitched bells (a 0 –d 1 ) sounds . All other Sundays are announced by the ringing of the three smaller bells (d 1 –e 1 –fis 1 ). Two bells ring for baptisms (d 1 –fis 1 ) and weddings (d 1 –e 1 ). The big bell rings alone at funerals, as well as at church services on Good Friday . Bell 2 is intended for the noon chime at 12 p.m. and the evening chime at 6 p.m., which is struck seven times during the Our Father's Church service (for the seven petitions of the Our Father).
