The Church of St. Peter is the Roman Catholic parish church of Rümlang in the canton of Zurich .

history

In 952 the church of St. Peter in Rümlang was first mentioned in a document. This church has undergone various renovations over time, the Romanesque church was replaced by a higher choir tower in 1302 or 1316 and rebuilt in 1471 after the village and church were destroyed in the Old Zurich War in 1444 by the Confederates . After the Reformation in 1523, the house of God continued to be used as a Reformed church. In memory of the patronage of the medieval church in Rümlang, the Catholic parish was again named after St. Peter in the 20th century .

Today's parish of St. Peter Rümlang is a daughter parish of Maria Lourdes (Zurich-Seebach) or of her daughter parish Christkönig Kloten . On January 26, 1945, the Maria Lourdes parish in Zurich-Seebach bought a piece of land on Klotenerstrasse in Rümlang, on which there was a saddler's workshop. There, on December 16, 1945, the first Catholic service since the Reformation took place on Rümlanger soil. Later, the services took place in the singing hall of the Worbiger schoolhouse and then in the basement of the residential building In den Linden 11. On April 21, 1955, the foundation board of the parish Christkönig Kloten bought 23 ares of building land in the Chilisbäum. 1956 Rümlang was raised to the parish rectorate. On December 9, 1962, Rümlang received the first pastor without a church and without a parsonage, which was a special case in the canton of Zurich .

In order to adapt the infrastructure of the municipality of Rümlang to the growing population, an overall project was planned in 1963, according to which a new cemetery, a schoolhouse and a Reformed and a Catholic church should have been built. For cost reasons, however, the project was reduced in 1966 and the reformed parish decided not to build a new church, so that only the schoolhouse and the Catholic church were built on Rümelbachstrasse. The foundation stone was laid on July 29, 1969, the solemn festival of the church patron Saint Peter. On September 13, 1970, the Bishop of Chur , Johannes Vonderach , consecrated the church.

The parish of St. Peter Rümlang with its 2,198 members (as of 2017) is one of the smaller Catholic parishes in the canton of Zurich.

Building description

Exterior

The church, including the rectory and parish center, was built by the architect Bernhard Weis. The church and the church square are clearly visible from all sides and are almost three meters higher than the surrounding terrain. This slightly elevated position and the bright white in which the church is painted are reminiscent of the pilgrimage church Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp , the structure of which was also the model for the interior of the Church of St. Peter. Because the school buildings next to it were designed to be compact, the architect Bernhard Weis also built the church building with church, rectory and parish center as a uniform building cube, which allowed the necessary counterweight to the massive-looking school building to be created. This structural unit also gives the church building a compactness reminiscent of a rock. The church patron St. Peter was called a rock by Jesus himself. Weis writes about this connection: "The Church of St. Peter should, like an immovable rock, embody and hold together the Catholic Church life." The church does not have a steeple, as this in the overall project with schoolhouse, cemetery, Catholic and Reformed Church as common church tower of the two denominations would have been planned.

Interior and artistic equipment

The church is reached from the church square via two entrances, each of which leads to a long corridor. The holy water font at the entrance reminds of the baptism , the path into the church leads into silence. The right entrance to the church leads to a prayer corner, in the middle of which there is a column made of light Cristallina stone. 12 holes for candles are reminiscent of the 12 apostles whose names are engraved on the pillar plate. To the left of it on the wall is the sculpture of an enthroned Madonna and Child, which was made from lead . From the two entrances the view opens into the church, which is illuminated by light openings. The benches are grouped in a semicircle around the altar area. The baptismal font is on the left side of the altar area. The altar , the baptismal font and the column for the Apostle candles are made of light Cristallina and dark marble from Spain. The tabernacle , ambo and choir cross are made of oak and are provided with blue enamel plates. All the furnishings were created by the sculptor Alfred Huber , who lived and worked in Rümlang from 1970.

organ

In 1970 the newly built church received a small organ . It was a positive organ from Orgelbau Kuhn , Männedorf, with six registers. It stood on the gallery until the new organ was built. In 2005 Orgelbau Kuhn built today's instrument, which contains 22 sounding stops and has a mechanical action and an electrical stop action. Father Ambros Koch from Einsiedeln Abbey was the organ expert . The organ was inaugurated on December 11, 2005.
