St. Peter ob Gratsch is a church from the Carolingian era in the South Tyrolean municipality of Dorf Tirol .

history

During excavations, two previous buildings were found, the older one dates back to the fifth century. The current church was built in the eighth or early ninth century. The floor plan corresponds to that of a Latin cross . Some preserved remains of pre-Romanesque stucco sculptures testify to the time of construction . The north aisle was initially designed as a burial chapel and separated from the rest of the church. The separation wall was only breached later.

At the time of the first mention in 1178, St. Peter was a separate church of the noble free von Burgus-Wangen; it was the pastoral care church of Gratsch and Pfelders as well as of individual farms in Algund , Riffian and Tyrol. In 1459 the church is attested as "sannt Peters pastor near Tyrol" , thus as a separate parish . This parish division was not changed until 1787.

In 1287 Meinhard II acquired the church patronage and transferred it to the Cistercian monastery in Stams .

Furnishing

Frescoes

The interior is characterized by Gothic apse frescoes from around 1380. In the calotte , Christ can be seen in the mandorla . The representation is surrounded by the evangelist symbols. This is followed by a cycle of apostles standing under canopies . Female saints can be found in the window reveals.

In addition to the Gothic, fragments of paintings from the Romanesque , Renaissance and Baroque periods can also be seen.

The bust of the Apostle Prince Paul, which is located in the south transept, is also important. The dating of this fresco varies between the Ottonian period and the 13th century.

Further equipment

Today's popular altar with its four pillars dates from the early Middle Ages and was hidden under a baroque high altar for a long time. Davor is located beneath a marble slab a kind Confessio miniature s in which even the original altar relics are kept.

Baroque figures of Peter and Paul flank the entrance to the choir .

A grave in the north aisle dates from late antiquity . It's hidden under a trap door.

There is also a baroque altar of Mary in the side aisle.
