St. Peter and Paul in Hroznětín

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul (Czech Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla ) in the Czech parish of Hroznětín (German Lichtenstadt ) is a protected architectural monument.

history

A first church was possibly built at the beginning of the 13th century by the Teplá Monastery in the center of Lichtenstadt. The single-nave building had a choir with a cross vault and a prismatic tower above the chancel. In 1384 the sacred building was listed in the court books as lucida civitatis . In 1413, the Archbishop of Prague , Konrad, confirmed a chaplain for perpetual times according to the opinion of the Tepler abbot of the church.

With the introduction of the Reformation , the church became Protestant. In 1568 a new cemetery was laid out outside the market. In 1581 Johannes Macasius from Villach in Carinthia was pastor of Lichtenstadt. He was previously pastor of plates in the Erzgebirge , exiled at the time of the Counter-Reformation of the Electorate of Saxony and died in 1624 in Zwickau . In 1592 the tower was rebuilt after a fire. After the Thirty Years War, Catholic worship was resumed. In 1643 the tower collapsed again. It was not until 1678 that the reconstruction began in the form of an octagonal baroque bell tower by the master carpenter Hans Georg Spaniger. In 1684, the future Archbishop of Prague Daniel Ignaz Joseph Meyer, who previously served as pastor in early penance in the Ore Mountains, was pastor of Lichtenstadt.

During the tenure of pastor Bernhard Heidl, the church received its current baroque appearance from 1732 to 1734. The developer was the Margravial Baden lordship, Schlackenwerth , which also had church patronage . The plans for the renovation come from an unknown architect, Veit Männl foreman and Leopold Fischer in 1733/34. The sculptor and master stonemason Jakob Reitzner from Neudek , the carpenter Christoph Müller from Lichtenstadt, the carpenters Johann Paul Kraus from Lichtenstadt and Johann Mohr from Theusing , and the glassmaker Georg Adam Schneider from Lichtenstadt were also involved in the renovation. In order to use the original presbytery as a sacristy, the Gothic triumphal arch was removed except for a smaller portal at the entrance to the sacristy. The new presbytery was built at the end of the enlarged nave.

In 1751, the "Mariahilf" bell was erected in Eger in honor of St. John of Nepomuk, St. Joseph and St. Pour Donata and hang in the tower. The church was badly damaged in a fire in 1873. During this event, the older Lichtenstadt registers, which begin around 1650, may have been lost. Karl Friedrich Richter directed the reconstruction using the old masonry. The interior received a new interior in the neo-renaissance style and the tower was given new bells by the bell founder Adam Pistorius from Eger. In 1875 it was re-consecrated.

In 1917 the bell had to be delivered for war purposes, only one bell remained in the tower. In 1921 Richard Herold from Komotau donated a new large bell to the church. In 1930 Lichtenstadt had 4047 Catholics and 103 non-Catholics. In 1939, the large parish comprised the towns of Lichtenstadt, Edersgrün, Großenteich, Halmgrün, Langgrün, Ruppelsgrün, Kaff, Lindig, Merkelsgrün, Tiefenbach, Ullersgrün, Salmthal and Wölfling. The last German pastor was Georg Stoffl from Neubäu . After the expulsion of the German population after 1945, the church remained unused and was consequently in need of renovation. In 2009, parts of the outer facade were restored and a new roof was installed. The Karlovy Vary Region contributed an amount of CZK 200,000.
