St. Peter of Alcantara in Unterschönegg

The Roman Catholic chapel of St. Petrus von Alcantara is located in Unterschönegg , a district of the municipality of Babenhausen in the Unterallgäu district ( Bavaria ). The building, erected in the 18th century, is a listed building. It bears the patronage of St. Peter of Alcantara .

history

The chapel was previously dedicated to the poor souls and was built in the 18th century. In 1738 a request was submitted to demolish the existing chapel and to be allowed to rebuild it 15 steps next to the old location. The chapel used to have a roof turret . The existing church tower was built after the middle of the 19th century. A restoration took place in 1935.

Building description

The nave consists of two axes with arched windows and has a flat ceiling inside over coves on the long sides. The narrowly drawn-in choir connects through a stinging arched choir arch , which is profiled in a neo-Gothic style on the fighter . On the outside the choir is closed on three sides, inside it is polygonal on seven sides. As in the nave, round-arched windows are also used in the wide sloping sides in the choir. The choir also has a flat ceiling. On the west side there is a gallery in the nave . Access to the chapel is through a arched door on the west side. There is a circumferential plinth on the outer facade of the chapel. The facade is structured by Tuscan pilasters with pieces of entablature. These are kinked at the polygon corners. The cornice of the pilasters is cranked with the profiled eaves cornice . On the west side there is also the church tower from the 19th century. It consists of a brick shell and is square with corner pilasters. Round arched doors lead into the church tower on the north and west sides. A profiled cornice divides the upper floor of the church tower with its arched openings. This is completed by a strongly profiled cornice. This is raised in the middle of each side and thus forms a pointed gable. The church tower is covered with a pyramid helmet .

Interior

The chapel's neo-Romanesque altar dates from the second half of the 19th century. The painting depicting St. Peter of Alcantara comes from the same period and was created by Hans Weckerle from Edelstetten . On the back it is marked with the name of the painter. On the north wall of the nave, a painting from the second quarter of the 18th century shows the painful Mary as intercessor of the poor souls before the crucified Jesus Christ . God the Father can be seen above it. The painting was the former altarpiece of the chapel. The wooden figures of the Resurrection Savior and the crucifixion group , consisting of a crucifix , Mary and the evangelist Johannes, date from around 1720/1730 . The two statuettes on both sides of the choir arch on bulged Neurococo consoles date from the middle of the 18th century . These represent St. Dominic on the right and St. Francis on the left. The lecture crucifix with its small body dates from the 18th century. The chairs in the chapel have a modern baroque style. It has richly curved board cheeks and is painted in the manner of a grain.
