St. Prosper in Gehlenberg , town of Friesoythe , is the parish church of the Catholic parish of St. Prosper, which belongs to the dean's office Emsland-Nord of the Diocese of Osnabrück .

history

The Duchy of Arenberg-Meppen planned in 1806 to build a church in 1788 in the wake of Moorkolonisierung founded Neuarenberg . In 1827, at the age of 25 , the architect Josef Niehaus was commissioned to build his first new church. The foundation stone was laid on May 28, 1829, and construction work was completed on November 7, 1831. In 1939 the church was expanded to the east by Theo Burlage .

Grave monument for Katharina Schücking

The classicistic hall church made of red brick with a hipped roof is divided by pilaster strips into seven fields in which there are arched windows. The center of the west side is a portal of sandstone with two Doric columns , an architrave and a triangular pediment .

The grave monument of the poet Katharina Sibylla Schücking (1791–1831), which was probably also designed by Josef Niehaus, is located in the cemetery next to the church .
