From 1919 to 1923 Burlage studied at the Technical University of Stuttgart , especially with Paul Schmitthenner and Paul Bonatz . He completed an internship with Hans Herkommer , who specializes in church construction , before setting up his own office in Osnabrück in 1925.

His breakthrough came in 1928 with his competition design for the Catholic Merchant Memorial Church of St. Boniface in Leipzig - Connewitz . Although only awarded third place in the competition, Burlage was commissioned to build the church in 1929.

After the Second World War, Burlage worked in a partnership or shared office with the architect Bernhard Niebuer.

Burlage had been a member of the Catholic student union AV Alania Stuttgart since 1919 .

  • around 1927: own house in Osnabrück, Albertstraße 25
  • 1928–1929: Catholic parish church and merchant memorial church of St. Bonifatius in Leipzig-Connewitz
The church has essentially been preserved as a total work of art of late expressionism with echoes of the contemporary art deco style and is a listed building . Parts of the furnishings such as the terracotta figures of saints were created by Albert Burges and Wolfdietrich Stein , and the leaded glass windows by Theo M. Landmann .
  • 1929: Catholic parish church St. Franziskus in Schöninghsdorf (today part of Twist (Emsland) )
The church shows the style of Expressionism both inside and out; the design seems to be influenced by the ideas of Bruno Taut . Eckard Wagner, the longtime director of the Emslandmuseum Schloss Clemenswerth, described it as “a masterpiece of modern church architecture in north-west Germany”.
