history

At the site of today's parish church, the chapel " St. Jobst " was first mentioned in 1464 in the fief book of the Waldthurn rulers . According to the then ruler, Willibald von Wirsberg , this already expanded chapel still existed in 1544, but was already dilapidated. The earliest church accounts begin with 1543 and from 1545 it is kept as the "job register". According to this, from 1547 the new church and steeple can be traced in detail. The church was built with funds from the parish alone, and numerous requests were made , i.e. free work by the residents of Waldthurn. The church of St. Jobst was originally a branch of the parish church Lennesrieth , in 1685 Waldthurn became its own parish and the church there became a parish church.

During the market fire on July 28, 1714, the church and the vicarage were " miserably put in ashes except for the vault ". First the church was poorly restored, but then demolished in 1736 due to disrepair and rebuilt with an enlarged nave . After the dilapidated church tower was demolished, a wooden bell tower was built on the remains of the wall, but they were not very happy with it, as the bells in the market were hardly heard. The next market fire followed on September 18, 1776, and the church and rectory burned down to the ground. Reconstruction was delayed as there was considerable mismanagement in church administration. The tower construction dragged on until 1795, only in 1797 the tower head could be put on with an onion dome . After the reconstruction, the church was called "successful", it was equipped with two bells and an organ, which was replaced in 1821 by a work by the Amberg organ maker Wilhelm Hepp .

In the next local fire on October 5, 1865, the church and parsonage burned down to the ground. The old church registers were also burned. In the same year the church and tower were secured with an emergency roof. The church and tower could be rebuilt by 1867. Even before the First World War , an extension was considered, which was then carried out in 1922 under Pastor Haller according to plans by the Munich architect Hans Schurr . The extension made it possible to create 255 additional seats , and space for 100 children was created in the presbytery .

On March 11, 1981, at the request of Pastor Andreas Renner, the Episcopal Chamber of Finance approved a renewed conversion and expansion of the church building and the parsonage according to plans by the Munich architect Otmar Lehner. An almost square new building for 400 seats was created on the south side, the extension built in 1922 had to be removed; During the renovation work, the foundations of a previous building were also excavated. On June 26, 1983, the building was inaugurated by Diocesan Bishop Manfred Müller .

In the middle of the sanctuary is the people's altar . On the wall is a symbolized tree of life , on the far left is a baptismal font and to the right of the altar is an ambo , and even further to the right is a statue of Our Lady from the earlier church. The angled ceiling is designed with wood.

The former presbytery with vault has been preserved and is now used as a chapel for saints; This is where the historic guild poles are also set up.
