St. Sebastian Church in Affaltern

The Catholic parish church of St. Sebastian in Affaltern , a district of the market town of Biberbach in the Augsburg district in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , was built in 1698. The church at Pfarrer-Brümmer-Straße 16, consecrated to St. Sebastian , is a protected architectural monument .

history

Affaltern was a branch of the Salmannshofen parish until the middle of the 18th century . According to a note in the land register of the former parish, a church was built there as early as 1262.

Today's church building was built in 1697/98 according to plans by the builder Valerian Brenner from Günzburg and replaced a previous building on the same site, the existence of which has already been proven for 1617. The foundation stone was laid by the treasurer and pastor Anton Ginter from Biberbach on July 16, 1697. The building owner was pastor Jakob Hörmann, who is commemorated by a memorial stone in the church. In the first construction phase, the tower and choir of the church were completed on October 3, 1697. The nave was built in a second construction phase. In 1724 a new high altar was purchased that no longer exists. The founding of a St. Albans brotherhood is documented in 1732.

In 1758, the Salmannshofen parish was transferred to Affaltern and the St. Sebastian branch church was elevated to a parish church. With the transfer of the parish seat, a cemetery was laid out next to the church in Affaltern and a new parsonage was built which was demolished in the 1960s. In 1779, according to a report, the church was in "a miserable condition, completely smoky and coal-black". On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the parish, a comprehensive renovation of the church took place in 2007/08.
