St. Severin

The Catholic parish church of St. Severin is a quarry stone church building in Frongasse in Erpel , a town in the Neuwied district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is a protected cultural monument .

history

The basement of the tower has been preserved from the previous building erected in the 11th or early 12th century. The building was demolished and rebuilt in the middle of the 13th century. The two eastern bays of the aisles and galleries were removed in 1751 to make the building lighter and more spacious. The result was a transept , similar to the Trier Cathedral . The nave was extended to the tower and the choir windows were enlarged.

Originally the three-aisled gallery basilica , built in the Rhenish transition style , had two double bays and a rectangular choir.

Furnishing

  • Figure of the Archangel Michael around 1475
  • Pulpit from 1736 (Archangel Michael is on the sound cover)
  • Church window in the choir from around the 15th century
  • Niche cross, dated 1667, base and body from 1870 and 1956

Bells

There are currently four bells in the tower of the parish church. The small Donatus bell is rung as a soloist.

Local coat of arms with the three crowns

Trivia

When, according to legend, Archbishop Reinald von Dassel stopped in the village when the relics of the three kings were transferred from Milan to Cologne in 1164, the older church building received the relics. For this reason, the local coat of arms has three crowns in the upper field.
