The Church of St. Severin is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Heining district of Passau . The church patron is St. Severin von Noricum (memorial day: January 8th).

history

The first documentary mention of Heining as Huninga dates back to the year 781. In 970 a church consecrated to St. Severin von Noricum ("basilica in huningam") is mentioned for the first time. At that time there was already an "old chapel" next to the church. In 1189 Heining belonged to the Vornbach monastery . A Romanesque church was built around 1250 , the remains of which can still be found in the south wall of the church. A pastoral care center in Heining was first mentioned in 1383. Around 1400 Heining was incorporated into the cathedral crypt's charity . From this point on, pastoral care is provided by cathedral vicars from Passau.

In 1469 the Gothic choir and tower are built. The matriculation books are preserved from 1593. In 1688 a separate priestly apartment was built for the vicariate; In 1716 Heining was finally raised to an independent parish. The cemetery, which at that time was still around the church, was extended for the last time in 1733. In 1760 the church received a crucifix by the sculptor Joseph Deutschmann from Passau- St . Nikola . In 1804 the church received three altars from the abandoned port chapel of the Fürstenzell monastery as well as the small choir organ from the also abandoned St. Nikola monastery .

The nave was lengthened by 7 m in 1859. The cemetery around the church was closed in 1887 and moved to the outskirts. In 1893 the church was renovated in a neo-Gothic style . In 1895 a new organ was installed by Martin Hechenberger .

Between 1915 and 1925 there are several renovation and new building plans for the church. The new church was finally built in Auerbach from 1927 .

In 1923 the ceiling painting " Holy Trinity " by Xaver Dietrich was created in the presbytery . In 1925 and 1949 the church received new bells. In 1969 the interior of the church was renovated and the sacristy was enlarged. In the course of this renovation work, the baroque pulpit will be expanded. This is now in the parish church of Kreuzberg near Freyung . Over the centuries the patronage of the church changed from St. Severin von Noricum on St. Severin of Cologne . This was also corrected in 1969.

The former Severinskapelle

Late Gothic portal of the former Severinskapelle

To the east of the church is the old Heining schoolhouse, which was built in 1818 through the renovation of the secular Severinskapelle.

This chapel was built over a stream, which is now piped, and had with St. Severin von Noricum has the same patronage as the main church. It is mentioned as early as 970 when the church was first mentioned as the "old chapel". In contrast to the church, this chapel is not faced as it was usual in the Middle Ages . When the cemetery was expanded in the late Middle Ages, it was not moved to the enclosed area, but left in an unfavorable, flood-prone place. This speaks for an extraordinarily old age of the chapel or its predecessor building, which has a direct relation to the life of St. Severin does not rule out. From the outside, only the late Gothic, former portal reminds of the former chapel. In 1886 the school was enlarged again. In 1963 the Heininger School moved to a new building, the old school has been used as a residential building ever since.
