The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Stephan in Hamburg-Wandsbek is located at the intersection of Stephanstraße with the same name and Tilsiter Straße in the garden city of Wandsbek .

Building the church

The nave was built from 1955 to 1956 together with the pastorate and the parish hall under the direction of Horst Fischer . On November 11, 1956, Bishop Wilhelm Halfmann consecrated the church.

The floor plan of the building is an east-west oriented rectangle, which is extended on the west side by two bay windows for the entrance area and the baptistery. It was designed as a hall church with the classic arrangement of the benches around a central aisle and offers space for more than 300 people.

In the years 1961 to 1962 the building was extended to include the striking church tower , which also contains group rooms in the lower part.

Furnishing

The pillarless interior is dominated by a large oak cross on the east wall, the organ gallery and a round window made of colored glass dominate the west wall. Angels making music are shown, a motif from the Revelation of John . The windows in the south and north walls are made of glass with simple tints.

The entire interior is characterized by works by the sculptor Siegfried Assmann . In 1960 he created the cross on the altar wall, the oak pulpit and the apostle figures. The stained glass window on the west wall as well as the baptismal font and the relief in the baptistery are also from him. The only work of art visible from the outside, the mosaic depicting the stoning of Saint Stephen above the entrance, is Assmann's work. What is unusual in the chancel is the non-central arrangement of the altar table, which, like the pulpit, is arranged on the side under the oversized crucifix.

Bells

The first bell was already present when the nave was inaugurated, but it was still housed in a steel frame on the ground floor. Its steel bells came from the Preetz town church and were hung in the tower after it was built.

Since 1977 the church has had three bronze bells from the Heidelberg bell foundry . The big bell has the strike tone f sharp ′ and a weight of 665 kg, the middle bell has the tone a ′ and a weight of 453 kg, the smallest the tone h ′ with a weight of 337 kg. The smallest of the old bells came to the Friedland camp in the same year ; the large one was damaged and had to be melted down.

Church music and organ

There has been a lively musical life in the community since it was founded. The choir , established in 1959, has become known well beyond its borders for high-quality church music. These included compositions by church musician Joachim Schweppe from the neighboring community and a world premiere of a work by Heinz Wunderlich .

There has been a children's music theater in the community since 1983 and a nationally known brass band since 1972 . The men's choir “Quartett Mozart” , which has been awarded the Zelter plaque and the Wandsbeker Culture Prize, is also based here.

The organ with 18 registers on two manuals and one pedal is an instrument made by the organ building company EF Walcker & Cie. from 1958. It was renovated and slightly changed from 1995 to 1997 by Rudolf von Beckerath organ builder . Your current disposition is:
