St. Stephan in Metzenried

The Catholic Church of St. Stephan or St. Stephanus is a monument in Metzenried near Schiltberg . It is a branch of the parish of St. Michael in Ruppertszell .

history

Metzenried, a clearing site from the 9th to 11th centuries, belonged to the Tandern rule early on . The place was first mentioned in a document in 1369, when Hans der Eiselzrieder, the then lord of the Tandern castle, bequeathed the Osterhof to the Indersdorf monastery . St. Stephan was also part of the Tandern parish until 1934 . The Holy Stephan was considered a saint of horses ; On St. Stephen's Day, December 26th, a horse blessing took place in Metzenried until 1961 , to which farmers from all over the area went on a pilgrimage with their animals to have them blessed. After tractors increasingly took over the task of horses in agriculture in the 1960s, the horse pilgrimage to St. Stephan also ended. Today there is another mass in the church once a month.

Building description

St. Stephan is a flat-roofed hall building from the 14th century with a three-sided closed Gothic choir and tower . The church is surrounded by a walled cemetery .

Furnishing

In the south-eastern choir window there are three paintings from the 16th century. While one shows the stoning of St. Stephen, the other two bear the inscriptions " Herr Conrad von Egenhofen, Pastor zue Puchham 1508 " and " Herr Hans Spitzmaus vivary zue Tannen 1508 ". The original narar-style altars are no longer there. Today's high altar is probably a former side altar from Ecknach . In the altar sheet from 1730/40 the cattle patron Pope Silvester is shown, including Ecknach and people who pray for their cattle.
