The St. Trinitatis Castle Church is located in the Molsdorf district of the city of Erfurt in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish Ichtershausen-Holzhausen in the parish of Arnstadt-Ilmenau of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

In the lower village there was originally a church to our dear women on the site of today's old cemetery , which fell into disrepair at the beginning of the 17th century.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the St. Alban's Church was demolished and in the years 1717–1721 the castle church was built on its foundation walls by the Hanoverian land soldier Otto Christoph Schulze for 10,000 thalers. On the 20th Sunday after Trinity 1720 she was given the name of the Holy Trinity for the festival service . Schulze bequeathed a further 2,000 thalers to the church in order to finance an organist with the interest and to support the poor.

The church has largely been preserved in its baroque shape, painting and furnishings. At the end of the 19th century, parts of the wall and ceiling painting were added and repaired.

From 1945 to 1989 the church fell into disrepair and was in danger of collapsing. A citizens' initiative was founded which managed to save the church. In 1998 the Friends' Association for the Rescue of the Schloßkirche Molsdorf e. V. founded, who took care of the restoration. There are regular concerts in the church. Since 2014 it has been the venue for the “Summer Concerts in Erfurt Village Churches” project run by the Erfurt Chamber Music Association .

architecture

The building consists of a high central nave , two low side aisles and a square west tower with a hood and lantern and a semicircular east apse .

Furnishing

  • Altarpiece with the Lamentation of Christ from the previous church, 1st half of the 17th century
  • Six oil paintings by the painter Hedwig Ruetz (maybe sister of Michael Ruetz ), daughter of a Riga journalist and student of the painter Max Liebermann . She and her sister, a singer, stayed at Molsdorf Castle in the 1930s, which they had chosen as their summer residence. The paintings were made available to the parish by the artist in 1934 . They are free copies after frescoes by the Italian master Fra Angelico , which are in the Convent of San Marco in Florence.
  • Two-manual organ , built by Johann Christoph Thielemann from Arnstadt in 1721. Parts of the organ case and individual stops date from this time. Gustav Adolf von Gotter had the organ enlarged at his own expense. The organ builder Helfenbein from Gotha rebuilt it in 1934.
