St. Urban (Egelsee)

St. Urban is a chapel in Egelsee , a suburb of Tannheim in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia .

History and location

In 1482 the chapel was first mentioned as a branch church of Tannheim. Towards the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1647, the chapel was profaned by Memmingen iconoclasts. Despite this loss there are valuable works of art in the chapel.

St. Urban high altar

In the middle of the high altar shrine from the 17th century is Mary the mother of Jesus of Nazareth , framed by Benedict of Nursia and George , above Mary the Holy Spirit , in the representation of a dove. Left and right of the shrine, as baroque side figures of Catherine of Alexandria and Barbara of Nicomedia .

In the upper niche of the high altar is the figure of the patron saint of the chapel, Pope Urban I († 230). The saint of winemakers holds his attribute , the grape , in his left hand . Urban is flanked by another Urban figure and Martin von Tours . About Urban in Baroque fashion, two angels left and right.

To the right of the high altar is a pietà and further back a processional cross . The chapel faces east has an attached bell tower.

The listing of the saints Benedikt and Georg refer to the fact that Egelsee belonged to the spiritual territory of the Benedictine imperial abbey of Ochsenhausen from 1482 until the secularization .
