The church in Sülzfeld

The Evangelical Lutheran village church of St. Veit is located in Sülzfeld in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia and belongs to the Hermannsfeld parish in the Meiningen parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM).

history

In the square of the church Sülzfelder one was already in the Middle Ages St. Veit consecrated chapel with Gaden . Count Wilhelm III. von Henneberg-Schleusingen equipped the church in such a way that it was separated from the parish of Ritschenhausen and became independent in 1464 , which Bishop Johann von Würzburg confirmed in the same year. In 1630 the foundation stone was laid for a new building. During the Thirty Years War , construction continued until 1634; After the end of the war in 1648, when Sülzfeld only had nine men, eight women and 20 children, the building of the tower continued. In 1656 the tower button was put on. Sülzfeld got the first organ in 1688.

In 1858 a large fire destroyed the church, 55 houses and several barns. Just a year later, the reconstruction of the church, which was inaugurated in 1861, began according to plans by August Wilhelm Döbner . A new organ with 26 registers was created in 1864 by Johann Michael Schmidt from Schmiedefeld .

description

The church, located at the highest point of the village on the edge of a slope, with its largely preserved cemetery fortifications, is a good example of the fortified churches in this area. The high ring wall of the churchyard with its fortifications is older than the church itself and already existed at the time of the former St. Vitus Chapel. The main decoration of the exterior is the portal on the south side from the year 1631. It is crowned with a coat of arms , which shows the course swords , the Saxon diamond wreath and the hen . A round stair tower with a spiral staircase is built on the south side of the main tower. In the church fire in 1858, the interior and the spire were completely destroyed. The main room of the church is a rectangular hall with a flat wooden ceiling. There are two-storey galleries on the north and south sides .

Climbing tower

In 2014 a climbing system was installed in the church tower , which is operated by the Meiningen section of the German Alpine Club .
