St. Vigil in Altenburg

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Vigil in Altenburg near Kaltern in South Tyrol ( Italy ) is a late Gothic building. The curate church of the parish Maria Himmelfahrt in Kaltern, consecrated to Saint Vigilius of Trient , stands on a porphyry hill, on which there was once a castle complex that has now disappeared.

The church is already mentioned in the so-called Vigilius Letter , a document from the middle of the 9th century, which has only survived in a revision from the 1st half of the 11th century, as "ecclesia sancti Uigilii de Castello" and as a subsidiary church of The parish of Kaltern and its equipment of goods and relics are described in detail by the bishops of Trento . Later a church building for 1288, 1326 and 1390 is documented. In 1332 a monk named Ullin appears as the church administrator. The current church was built in the late Gothic style between 1491–97 and consecrated in 1510.

On the north outside a large has remnants Christopher - outdoor fresco get from 1360/80. An exterior fresco that was created in the first half of the 15th century on the west side and spoiled by improper restoration shows what is known as a depiction of sorrow : next to a cross with a figure of Christ reminiscent of the Volto Santo of Lucca , two holy women and men can be seen , including the abbot Antonius and probably the martyr Barbara . A medallion frieze with the fourteen helpers in need has completely faded.

The furnishings impress with their carved neo - Gothic winged altar from 1912 with statues and four reliefs, 7 m high, a joint work by Stanis Gruber († 1933) from Eppan , who designed the design, and the woodcarver Jakob Mussner from Val Gardena . The life and death of the patron saint of the church, the diocesan saint of Trento, is depicted . The altarpiece has been preserved from the original baroque high altar, painted in oil by Josef Arnold the Elder in 1816 or 1818 and also showing the church patron. The glass paintings date from the 19th century and show the holy "brothers" of Vigilius, namely Claudian and Magorian , as well as the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul .

The standing in the west bell tower from the 14th century and the church roof are glazed with colored, in diamond patterns laid beaver tails covered.

The little church is a popular wedding church . After a theft, the sacred building is now alarmed and reopened to visitors.
