St Andrew's Church (Dundee)
The St Andrew's Church is a parish of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Dundee in the same council area . In 1963 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is not to be confused with the Catholic St Andrew's Cathedral, also located in Dundee .
history
The merchants' guild of the growing city of Dundee approached the city council with a request for a new church to be built. However, the city of Dundee denied the request, so the guild began planning St Andrew's Church at its own expense. The foundation stone was laid in a ceremony on June 4, 1772. The Scottish architect Samuel Bell was responsible for the design of the church building, which was completed in 1774, and probably adapted a design by James Craig from 1769 .
Colonel Hunter of Burnside later acquired the clock tower that had been in the church since it opened. His son General David Hunter donated it in 1826 to the newly built St Aidens Church in Broughty Ferry . Today's tower clock was made by James Ivory . Today St Andrew's Church is the only surviving guild or guild church in Scotland.
description
St Andrew's Church is on King Street off the A929 / A991 on the northeastern edge of Dundee city center. The elongated hall church has a classical design with Palladian motifs. Its quarry stone masonry was possibly once plastered with Harl . The bell tower on the west side is designed with arched openings and thermal bath windows. In the third section, in which the tower clocks are embedded, the tower tapers. Above it, it is continued in an octagonal fashion and closes with a pointed helmet, the weather vane of which is designed as a dragon. The five-axis-wide side facades are each designed with two Venetian windows . Ionic pilasters structure the facade vertically. The final gable roof is covered with slate.
