history

It was the textile manufacturer George Coats, 1st Baron Glentanar , who donated the building of the first Episcopal Church in Aboyne. His wife Margaret laid the foundation stone in 1907. The Largs- based architecture firm Fryers & Penman is responsible for the design . After the work was completed in 1909, the Bishop of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney consecrated the church. The leaded glass windows date from different epochs. The oldest were made in 1584; others in the early 17th century. However, new windows were also made showing the Coats coat of arms. The bell was cast by John Warner from London. The organ is from Abbott & Smith .

description

The neo-Gothic church building is on Ballater Road , Aboyne's main thoroughfare ( A93 ). It is largely a copy of the pre-Reformation Church of St. Mary at Burrough on the Hill in Leicestershire, England . The main differences are the length of the choir , the design of the tracery and the use of granite instead of sandstone . The ogival , double-winged entrance portal is located on the long, asymmetrically constructed north side in a component protruding from the side aisle . Tracery along the aisle flank the entrance.

The south facade is designed with three tracery and smaller pointed arch windows in the upper storey. The protruding sacristy and the choir are illuminated through narrow lancet windows. There is a door on the left. The east-exposed choir closes with a large tracery and a stone cross at the gable. On the three-tier bell tower, lancet windows are partially coupled to form twins . It is made with buttresses and a cantilevered stone balustrade . Lukarnen are embedded in the pointed helmet . It closes with a weather vane .
