history

The school was officially established on September 5, 1949. Until then, only the state fire brigade school in Regensburg was available for fire brigade training throughout Bavaria. Therefore, in 1948 it was decided to open a fire brigade school in Lower Franconia. The premises for the Würzburg fire brigade school were provided free of charge by the fire chief of the US fire department and were located in a large brick building built in 1887/1888 in the Faulenberg barracks directly on Nürnberger Straße. The rooms in the subsequently plastered building were converted and renovated for this purpose, and the US Army also made part of its property available outdoors. Two types of courses were carried out: "Machinist" course and "Fire extinguisher" course. In 1950 the Würzburg School received its final approval.

In 1952, however, the US Army canceled the lease. The search for a suitable new property followed. Finally, in the same year, the current site on Mainaustrasse in Zellerau was acquired. New school buildings were built by 1954. A "mobile fire brigade school" was set up at short notice to bridge the gap during the planning phase and during the construction phase. The staff drove across the country with an LF 15 and carried out training courses in the districts.

Both the building stock and the property itself were continuously expanded in the following years. The school building was expanded, vehicle halls, exercise hall and in 1965 a staff building were built. The latter was increased in 1977 and connected to the school building. In 1989, an extension was built on Mainaustrasse in the direction of the Main, which, in addition to additional vehicle halls and classrooms, also houses a large breathing protection training center (with a breathing protection test section). In 1996 further construction work took place on the site of the former Hindenburg barracks.

In 2000, the first fire house in Bavaria was inaugurated at the entrance to the fire brigade school on Mainaustrasse. It is a system in which various fire scenarios can be played. Four years later, a modern farm building was put into operation adjacent to Weißenburgstrasse.

In October 2012 the groundbreaking took place for the school's own boat harbor on the Main. The new boat harbor was officially inaugurated on May 16, 2014. On July 25, 2013, the groundbreaking ceremony for a new, 30-meter-high exercise hall. Together with a new fire station with twelve parking spaces and an energy center, the new practice hall was inaugurated on November 3, 2016. The Free State of Bavaria invested a total of EUR 29.5 million in these three properties.

Another accommodation building with 50 beds is to be built by 2022; the expansion of the exercise options takes place in parallel.
