State founding monument

The State Founding Monument is a monument erected in memory of the founding of the Austrian Republic in 1918 and its resurrection in 1945 . It is located in the Schweizergarten in Vienna's 3rd district, Landstrasse, and was installed on October 25, 1966. It is not to be confused with the republic monument on the Ringstrasse .

description

The monument consists of two curved pillars made of chrome-nickel steel, which combine to form a column. The surface has polished ornaments. Near the sculpture, by the sidewalk, there are stone and concrete writing desks with the text of the declaration of independence of April 27, 1945. However, there is no corresponding reference to the cause and purpose of the construction.

Official commemoration

Only in 2015, on April 27, on the 70th anniversary of the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence, was the first state ceremony held at the state founding monument.

Artist and maker

The monument was designed by the Viennese sculptor Heinrich Deutsch and the architect Berthold Gabriel. The design was actually supposed to be set up as an 11.55 meter high granite column, but this was discarded for reasons of cost. The metal version was produced by the VÖEST steel construction department. There is no reference to the designing artists in the monument.
