State Council (Danzig)

The Council of State was in 1920, the quasi-government under formation Free City of Danzig .

Through the Versailles Treaty (VV) of 1920 Danzig ( Article 100-108 Section XI, Part III VV) were separated from the German state association. On January 9, 1920, an implementation agreement was concluded and sovereignty over the future Free City of Danzig passed to the victorious powers. The German troops of the Danzig garrison were dismissed and Allied troops under General Richard Haking moved in at the beginning of February . The British diplomat Reginald Thomas Tower was appointed administrator and provisional high commissioner of the League of Nations .

On March 5, 1920, Towers appointed the Council of State to conduct the current administrative business. It initially consisted of Mayor Heinrich Sahm as chairman, the senior government councilor von Kamenke and the deputy district administrator Emil Venske .

By decree of March 20, the Council of State was enlarged by 6 representatives of the political parties and by heads of various administrations. These heads of the authorities (court, railways, customs administration, post office) were only entitled to vote in matters that affected their own departments.

He now had the competence to issue ordinances with the force of law and to decide on the raising and use of funds. Reginald Thomas Tower reserved the right to confirm individual resolutions and requested that all resolutions be presented.

After the Free City of Danzig was formed, the Senate of the Free City of Danzig was elected and replaced the Council of State.
