The city Canal tunnel or Stad Ship Tunnel is an in-planning Canal tunnel on the territory of the municipality city in the western Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Vestland , the Peninsula city to traverse.

The tunnel is to cross Stadlandet roughly at its narrowest point, the approximately 1.7 km wide isthmus in the south, and thus create a connection for shipping between the Moldefjord in the west near Eide and the Vanylvsfjord in the east near Kjøde. The planned waterway would make the connection between Måløy and Torvik on the Hurtigruten safer and should also be navigable for cargo ships and cruise ships. The newer generation of passenger ships operating on the Hurtigruten for up to 1000 passengers (built from 1993) are up to 21.50 meters wide ( Finnmarken (Schiff, 2002) ), up to 138.50 meters long and have a draft of up to 5.1 meters ( Fram (Schiff, 2007) ).

Therefore, a 1.7 km long tunnel is planned, the profile of which is to have a height of 49 meters, a width of 36 meters and an area of ​​around 1625 square meters. The tunnel ceiling should be designed as a round arch (semicircular with a radius of 18 m). With a water depth of 12 m, the clearance above water would allow a maximum passage height of 37 m. The fairway itself should be 26.5 m wide at the water level, and on both sides it will be flanked by 4.75 m wide access paths with railings and recessed niches including a ladder. Thus, the ship tunnel would be large enough to allow the Hurtigruten ships to pass through. Around 3 million cubic meters of rock had to be blasted out of the rock to build the tunnel. The start of construction work is planned for 2020. Completion is expected around 2023 or 2024. The construction costs have so far been estimated at 2.699 billion Norwegian crowns , around 275 million euros.
