The Stade Louis-Nicollin is a planned football stadium in the southern French city of Montpellier , capital of the Hérault department . It is intended to replace the Stade de la Mosson from 1972 as the home ground of the football club HSC Montpellier .

history

In 2016 it was announced that HSC Montpellier was planning to build a new stadium together with the city and the Occitania region . At a press conference in summer 2018, in the presence of Mayor Philippe Saurel, Club President Laurent Nicollin gave the first details about the project. The new building should be called Stade Louis-Nicollin , after the former club president Louis Nicollin. Laurent Nicollin's father was in office from 1974 until his death in 2017. The venue was to have around 30,000 seats and be part of a 20,000 m² new building area in the new district called Cambacérès, after Jean-Jacques Régis de Cambacérès . In addition to the football stadium, a hall is planned for the club's handball and basketball teams. The project as a whole is estimated to cost 200 million euros , including 150 million euros for the stadium. The city wants to invest 50 million euros in the stadium with the region. The association and its parent company, Groupe Nicollin, will bear the remaining costs. Construction should start in 2019. On June 7 of this year, the opening day of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup , which should foundations be laid. The new home of HSC Montpellier should be ready for use by the 2022/23 season. The Stade de la Mosson, however, is not to be demolished, as it is in a floodplain and cannot be rebuilt there after the demolition. The old sports facility will continue to be used in a different function.

In June 2019 it became clear that the planning for the construction was delayed. At the proposed location in Cambacérès, doubts were raised about a noise protection plan as to whether the stadium should be built there. According to media reports, a new site should be found for the Stade Louis-Nicollin . On June 11th, Mayor Philippe Saurel announced in a press conference that the construction project would be delayed by at least a year. At Christmas 2019, the mayor announced the new location. The previous location was less than 500 m from the listed Château de la Mogère , so it was decided to relocate. The new building in Cambacérès is to be erected south of the Odysseum shopping center . The A 9 car route passes there near it. In contrast to the Stade de la Mosson, the planned building site is at the other end of town. The new station of line 1 of the Montpellier tram should be ready by 2022 and the new TGV station Gare de Montpellier-Sud-de-France has been located 500 m from the construction site of the Stade Louis-Nicollin since 2018 . The plans include a starred restaurant with a view of the playing field, a hotel, shops, an official fan shop , a seminar room , a health room , an e-gaming center and virtual reality , office space, the Nicollin Museum and perhaps a casino . The stadium framework could be made of wood. A photovoltaic system is to be installed on the roof . An underground car park with 2,000 spaces is planned under the stadium . However, it will not be reserved for football fans during games, but for guests in the restaurant, hotel and other stadium areas. The opening of the new home of HSC Montpellier is targeted for 2023 or 2024, according to Mayor Saurel. Originally, the new football arena should offer 30,000 to 35,000 seats. That number has been reduced to 25,000. After the HSC Montpellier for 2009/10 season in the Ligue 1 had returned an average of around 17,000 spectators came in the early years to the home games. At the end of the 2010s the numbers were between 12,000 and 15,000 visitors. The project is to be taken over entirely privately by Groupe Nicollin, a waste management company , and the investors, but the metropolis will retain control of the urban development. It would be a new legal and financial regulation. The municipality must be able to take control of the stadium, e.g. B. if the club is sold, so Mayor Saurel.
