The steamship Stadt Überlingen was a paddle wheel steamer on Lake Constance . She was the last passenger steamship built for Lake Constance and, at over 60 meters, also the longest. It was named after the city of Überlingen on the northern shore of Lake Constance.
history
In 1927 the Deutsche Reichsbahn ordered two passenger ships with a capacity of 1,000 people each. While the port of Lindau with the Allgäu relied on diesel propulsion and propellers, the paddle wheel drive with steam engine was chosen again for the port of Constance. Due to the enormous size of the ship and the limited space available in the Lake Constance ports, the paddle wheels were arranged slightly in front of the center of the ship, which made it possible to improve the ship's maneuverability. On September 21, 1929, the new steamship was put into service as a replacement for the decommissioned Baden from 1871. However, the city of Überlingen was only used in the summer timetable on the Obersee longitudinal traffic and for special trips, as the coal consumption of 40 kg per kilometer was too uneconomical for permanent use. The city of Überlingen was not used all year round until the Second World War, when the diesel motor ships were increasingly decommissioned due to the fuel shortage . From 1945 to 1948 the ship was used as accommodation for the French occupation forces. After the ship was released, it was completely renovated. From 1960 the city of Überlingen was used as a replacement for the retired steam ships Zaehringen and Meersburg on the Überlinger See . In order to reduce the operating costs, the conversion to diesel-electric paddle wheel drive was examined. However, the renovation could not be carried out, and so the city of Überlingen was retired in 1963. She was moored in the port of Constance for two years and was then scrapped from June 1965 to January 1966. Your ship's bell can still be seen on board the Graf Zeppelin . In the ship's 34-year history, there was only one known failure when a steam valve broke in Bregenz in 1959 and the city of Überlingen had to be towed from the Augsburg to Konstanz.
size
The city of Überlingen was the longest passenger steamship on Lake Constance, and with a capacity of 1,000 people, it was also the largest. In terms of tonnage, the Austrian city of Bregenz, which weighs 366 tons, exceeded it by 3.5 tons.
In terms of Lake Constance steamships, the city of Überlingen holds third place behind the railway ferries Dampftrajekt I (70.1 m) and Dampftrajekt II (68.6 m).
particularities
In the tourist races for the Blue Ribbon of Lake Constance , the city of Überlingen won twice and took second place once. It was the only German passenger ship and the only steamship to win this race.
The ship's bell in the city of Überlingen has been wearing the Graf Zeppelin since 1989 .
