The city of Cologne was built in 1938 as a council ship for the city of Cologne and was intended to serve the city's guests at the International Transport Exhibition planned for 1940 . The ship was christened the Hanseatic City of Cologne on June 18, 1938 .

Construction and equipment

The city of Cologne was built as a double screwdriver from Siemens-Martin steel and partly from aluminum . The viewing saloon with large, three-part windows is located on the front main deck. The furnishings are in the Chippendale style, the walls and the ceiling are clad with matt walnut. Two doors on the side lead to the exit amidships as well as the guest apartment and the adjoining sun deck. The guest apartment with toilet, living room and reception room is paneled with white maple wood . A companionway leads from the front salon to the dining room and utility rooms, which are a little lower down. Starboard is the cloakroom, the kitchen and pantries, while the washrooms for passengers and the office are on portside. The wheelhouse, the foldable upper part of which is made of teak , has a large, wooden steering wheel, an engine telegraph , radar and radio system. The crew quarters are located in front of the engine room in the front part of the lower deck.

technology

In the front third of the lower deck is the engine room with two reversible Deutz diesel engines type RV 6M 536 with 375 hp each. To reduce noise, the motors are each mounted on 16 springs and four rubber dampers. The base plate is a welded construction, as are the exhaust manifolds. This, as well as the diverse uses of aluminum throughout the ship, contribute to weight savings. Thanks to a very aerodynamic hull shape, the ship reaches a speed of almost 20 km / h against the current. It is driven by two three-bladed propellers with a diameter of 1060 mm. An auxiliary diesel with 80 HP provides the power supply and the drive of the compressor for the starting air, which is stored in three air bottles with 30 bar.

history

Due to the outbreak of war, the ship was no longer used and was brought to the port of Sankt Goarshausen . At the end of the war, the US Army took over the ship and renamed it US Army PHI 1 . It was then used by the French High Commissioner. In 1952, the ship, now known as the City of Cologne , returned to the City of Cologne and was used for representation purposes , such as the reception of Queen Elizabeth II and other state and city guests. Because of the general savings plans and the high maintenance costs, the ship was to be sold in 1982. The city of Cologne has been a listed building since 1990 . The ship could also be rented for private parties. Its future has been uncertain since the end of 2008, as extensive repair work is required on the ship, the cost of which is estimated to be at least 500,000 euros.

The Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection , Cologne Regional Association, has chosen the ship as Monument of the Month for February 2012. He wants to draw attention to the civic commitment of the Association of Friends and Supporters of the MS Stadt Köln , which is currently being founded, under the direction of the Cologne Autbord- und Motoracht-Club , which wants to contribute to the preservation of the ship as a museum and event ship with occasional trips .

In the meantime there were indications that the ship was only able to swim to a limited extent and that the renovation costs could rise to up to 800,000 euros. Therefore, the city administration now wants to look for a buyer. "Here, historical, social and touristic aspects should be taken into account analogous to the concept of the development association," it says. “If this is not possible, the ship can be sold without any conditions of use.” On December 23, 2016, an agreement was reached with the Cologne City Council on the restoration and its financing. In 2019 the outer hull, the floor and the aft deck were refurbished so that the ship could be launched again on October 31, 2019. Work on the main deck is planned for 2020.
