The paddle steamer Stadt Luzern (I) was the first steamship on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland . It was procured by the Steamship Company of the Vierwaldstättersee , a predecessor of today's shipping company of the Vierwaldstättersee .

history

The ship was ordered from Escher Wyss in Zurich by the steam shipping company founded by Kasimir Friedrich Knörr in 1835/1836 . The city of Lucerne was a smooth decker 37.5  m long and 5.1 m wide. It had a crew of 6 and offered space for 300 people. In addition, ten tons of goods could be transported. The Balancing - steam engine came from Manchester . Its power was 40 hpnom , which corresponds to approximately 240 hp . Escher Wyss built the ship in an improvised shipyard in Lucerne. After being launched on July 29, 1837, the city of Lucerne was put into operation on September 20. The maiden voyage took three hours from Lucerne to Flüelen .

In 1838 the ship was equipped with a mast and sails, which were probably removed again during a renovation in 1849, as it soon became clear that there was no need for them.

Since 1872 only goods traffic has been carried out with the city of Lucerne . In 1881 she was decommissioned and, with the superstructure dismantled, still used as a tugboat. In 1888 it was converted to a screw drive with a 2-cylinder compound steam engine . Since a major overhaul in 1903, the ship was mainly used as a coal feeder for the steamships, since 1924 with a crude oil engine instead of the steam engine. Since the conversion of the steamships to oil firing meant that coal was no longer required, the ship was converted into a bilge de-oiler in 1963 . It was now called Biebo (bilge water emptying boat ) and was used as a service ship until 2005. In 2009 the Biebo was retired.

Later ships called Stadt Luzern on Lake Lucerne were the Stadt Luzern , which was scrapped in 1925, and the steamship Stadt Luzern , which is still in operation .

Incidents

After the wheel shaft broke, the city of Lucerne had to be towed by the St. Gotthard in 1862 .
