history

founding

The first considerations to create a municipal library go back to 1938. At that time the commercial association, the museum society and the arts and crafts association were in the process of dissolution. All three associations had valuable libraries. The mayor and the councilors were thinking about soliciting these books as a basis for a municipal library to be created.

The arts and crafts association left most of its holdings to the city and the other associations gave the city some remaining holdings for safekeeping and later use. In 1939 it was planned to set up the city library in the old trade school with the support of the State Public Library for Württemberg. With the beginning of the Second World War, all efforts to create a municipal library were temporarily stopped. It was not until 1947 that the creation of a public library was seriously tackled again. A call was made to the population of Geislingen to donate literature to the library, which was to be set up, and was eagerly complied with. The public education center Geislingen / Steige was opened with a festive ceremony in the Jahnhalle on October 10, 1948. The ceremony included the opening of the public education center (today VHS Geislingen), the founding of the Geislingen / Steige eV cultural association and the opening of the public library (today the Geislingen / Steige public library). The municipal public library got its domicile in the old trade school.

Years 1949 to 1994

In 1951 the company moved to the Uhland School, where the library was only available in a narrow space. This domicile was only intended as a temporary solution from the start. In 1953 the library was able to move to the office building at Parkstrasse 2, where more space was made available again. This meant that the number of loans could be doubled by the end of 1956. In 1958, shortly before its 10th anniversary, the city library moved into two new rooms in the old town hall. Thus, the possibility was given one of the books in freehand shelves set up. This was also the first step from the previous counter library to the future open access library. Gradually, this open access was expanded and since 1959 the children have had their own reading corner. In the same year, the city library designed the appearance of the premises with new furniture. Tables with chairs for reading were set up.

From 1962 onwards, by resolution of the municipal council, no more rental fees were charged. This decision resulted in a strong increase in reading interest (1960 = 18,853 loans ; 1962 = 36,595 loans). In 1966, by including part of the “old storage room”, the children and young people were given their own library space. Since this year the reader has also had the opportunity to order books for academic papers via interlibrary loan through the city library .

According to a resolution of the municipal council, from July 1975 loan fees had to be charged again, namely 0.20 DM per loan. In October of the same year it was found that this had reduced book sales by a third. Due to this continuing downward trend, the municipal council decided in 1976 to issue annual tickets instead of the loan fees. In January 1980 the local council decided to set up a branch of the city library in the Altenstadt district as part of a cultural concept. At the end of September 1981, the Altenstadt branch was opened in the Michelberggymnasium. In January 1981, by a resolution of the local council, lending fees were canceled. Since August 1982 the city library has also been open on Saturdays. At the end of 1983 the city library had a stock of 31,184 books and 284 audio cassettes. At the end of 1990 the library was able to reach 76,833 loans with a stock of 36,425 media, which meant twice the turnover of the media stock.

In 1991, the local council unanimously launched a new cultural concept. The city library with adult education center , city archive , culture office and other offices were to move into the converted and expanded administration building on the former MAG site. On March 15, 1993 the branch of the city library in Altenstadt was closed. The premises continued to be used as a school library . This measure took place with a view to the relocation of the library to the new building on the MAG area.

In the MAG

For the first time in 1994, all data was incorporated into an EDP library system . On March 25, 1994 the library in the old town hall was closed. there were only a few return days left. In May, a play castle was built in the children's area of the new library. In June the library furniture was set up while the interior work was still going on. In the same month, the move to the office and culture center in the MAG was completed.

On Friday, September 9th, 1994 the public library in the MAG was opened in connection with the office and culture center. Two open days and events follow. The newly furnished and designed library has since been offering media for all ages, a reading café and a book tower on 1,300 m². CDs and cards have been new to the media collection since then.

At the beginning of May 1995 the library was able to present a successful interim report. After eight months, the surveys showed that an annual doubling of the number of loans was to be expected in contrast to the numbers of the “old” library. The media inventory, which at that time was 25,000 media, had to be increased to meet the demand. At the same time, the local council decided to keep the branch closure permanently.

The results for 1997 turned out to be very positive. The annual loans rose to a previously unheard of 170,000. The media inventory was 35,000 media. The library was used by almost 63,000 visitors. Innovations this year were the establishment of an internet and CD-ROM workstation made possible by sponsors.

In 2003, electromagnetic book protection was introduced and the possibility of throwing media in via a return flap on the facade of the library. In 2004 a self-check system was set up. However, in 2009 this electromagnetic self-booking was taken out of service again due to significant technical defects.

From 2005 a functioning OPAC was finally available, which also allowed library customers to extend their own media account from home. In the same year the city library received a new website and new library software. The city library has been part of the Geislingen reading network in partnership with schools in Geislingen since 2006. Since 2010, the Michelberg-Gymnasium and the city library have been running the school library of the Gymnasium together as a non-public branch. The branch in Altenstadt, originally closed in 1993, is now connected to the city library again. However, the stock remains in the possession of the grammar school. In November 2008, the City Council of Geislingen determined the staffing of the city library so that only specialist staff should be employed. It was also determined that no further savings can be made on the institution's media budget. In the same year, the city library, in cooperation with the Göppingen city library, introduced the first “ Onleihe ” (digital lending facility for media) in Baden-Württemberg. The cooperation model is called "online library 24 * 7". In 2016, a total of 30 libraries were involved in the cooperation. In February 2010 the association for the support of the city library, the Geislinger Literaturnetzwerk eV, was founded, which since then has enabled a program of events for adults.

In 2011, the MAG City Library was one of the first three libraries in Germany to receive the “Excellent Library” seal of quality according to EFQM - CAF . Recertification was also achieved in 2014 and 2018. At the beginning of 2013, the library software was switched to Win-BIAP from Datronic. An important goal here was to be able to offer a contemporary OPAC. In 2014, the switch to the RFID booking technology began in cooperation with the Bibliotheca company. Since mid-2015, the booking has been made using RFID. The city library was therefore able to extend its opening hours to 2016. At the end of 2018, the city library had around 43,000 items lending more than 224,000 items.

In 2019, the MAG City Library was the first public library to receive the main prize in this year's newly created "Library of the Year Baden-Württemberg" award.
