The Kiel City Library is a public library . Its main office is located in the New Town Hall in Kiel, with nine branches spread across the city districts. With around 23,000 active users, it is the largest public library in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

On April 24, 1873, at a meeting of the “Society of Voluntary Poor Friends”, the decision was made to found a public library in Kiel. The public library at Holstenstrasse 31 was inaugurated in December of the following year. Due to the growing number of visitors and the increasing number of visitors, the move to Holstenstrasse 11 took place at the end of 1879. In the next few years the Kiel Public Library continuously expanded its holdings, which resulted in several moves.

On April 1, 1920, the state capital Kiel took over the library from the "Society of Voluntary Poor Friends". This is how the public library became the Kiel city library. In 1937 the library moved into the logenhaus on Lorentzendamm. The library was brought into line in line with National Socialist ideology. In 1944 a high-explosive bomb destroyed part of the lodge house. The move to the Oberlyseum II at Schützenpark followed. After the end of the Second World War , the library moved again. The library moved to what was then the middle school on Winterbeker Weg. National Socialist literature was removed and censored literature was made available to the public again.

In 1981 the library moved to the Holstenbrücke. The library stayed in the former building of the DeFaKa (Deutsches Familien-Kaufhaus GmbH) department store chain for 20 years. Here the changeover to an EDP system and to the system for libraries took place in order to create uniformity in Schleswig-Holstein's public libraries.

location

The central library has been located in the New Town Hall at Andreas-Gayk-Straße 31 since the end of 2000. It is centrally located in the city and in the immediate vicinity of the bus station and Kiel main train station . Many lines of the Kieler Nahverkehr (KVG) stop at Andreas-Gayk-Straße.

Duration

The inventory is measured at around 300,000 media units. This inventory consists of fiction, non-fiction, music CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, audio books, CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs, console games, language courses, magazines and newspapers and board games.

Lending system

Since March 4, 2013, the booking of media in the central library has been carried out using self- booking terminals . In addition to the return machine in front of the library, which can also be used to return media outside of the library's opening hours, there are terminals in the entrance area of the city library where customers can independently borrow, return and extend media.
