The Stadtmuseum Stuttgart (own name: StadtPalais - Museum für Stuttgart ) is a museum on the history of Stuttgart that was opened in April 2018 in the Wilhelmspalais . From 1965 to 2011, the headquarters of the Stuttgart city library was housed in the Wilhelmspalais, the former residence of the last King of Württemberg, Wilhelm II .
History of origin
Following the fundamental decision of the Stuttgart City Council to set up a new central library for the Stuttgart City Library in 1998, the City Library on Mailänder Platz in the Europaviertel was completed in October 2011 . This gave me the opportunity to create a museum for Stuttgart's city history in the Wilhelmspalais. In 2009, a design competition was held, in which the Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei office, in collaboration with Jangled Nerves from Stuttgart, was awarded. After the revision of the draft, the jury unanimously decided on February 26th, 2010 for further processing on the basis of the submitted draft. After the central library on Mailänder Platz was opened on October 24, 2011, the Wilhelmspalais was available for temporary cultural use. At the end of 2013, the conversion to the city museum began. Completion and opening took place on April 14, 2018. The costs for the renovation and furnishing of the museum were estimated at € 38.3 million including state subsidies.
