Municipal Lapidarium Stuttgart
The Stuttgart City Lapidarium is an open-air museum in the park of the former Villa Ostertag-Siegle in Stuttgart. Over 200 mostly stone testimonies from five centuries of Stuttgart's history are on display in the lapidarium , as well as the Roman collection of antiquities owned by Carl von Ostertag-Siegle (1860–1924).
In addition to the municipal lapidarium, there is also the Roman lapidarium of the Württemberg State Museum in the New Palace in Stuttgart , whose fund consists of Roman stone monuments from southwest Germany.
location
The lapidarium is located at Mörikestraße 24 above the Villa Ostertag-Siegle, which is in the Karlshöhe district in the Stuttgart-Süd district . After the villa was built between 1886 and 1888, the surrounding area was still fallow. In 1905, Carl von Ostertag-Siegle had the Renaissance garden laid out in it, which today houses the lapidarium. From Mörikestrasse, whose image is consistently characterized by magnificent villas from the 19th century, it extends in a north-westerly direction to the feet of the vineyard on Karlshöhe. In the southwest it meets the Willy-Reichert-Staffel, which merges into the Römerstraße to the southeast. The north-eastern border is formed by the gateway between Villa Ostertag-Siegle and the rear building Mörikestrasse 24 a, behind which the lapidarium continues to the border of the Villa Gemmingen park .
history
At the turn of the last century, many houses were demolished as part of the old town renovation and the artistically valuable components were placed in the cloister of the hospital church. In World War II this first Urban Lapidary was largely destroyed. In 1950, today's municipal lapidarium opened as an open-air museum in the park of Villa Ostertag-Siegle with remains from the old lapidarium and many works of art and components from the ruins of the buildings destroyed in the war. In 1953, thousands of tons of rubble were deposited on the Birkenkopf , including many remarkable fragments of works of art and components, so that a second lapidarium of its own was created there.
Old lapidary
In 1899, 47 residential buildings were demolished in Stuttgart's old town to make way for the new town hall, which was completed in 1905. In 1903, the catastrophic living conditions in the working-class quarters of the old town prompted the Association for the Welfare of the Working Class to renovate parts of the old town from the ground up with the support of the city over the next six years, for which a further 87 houses were demolished. 34 new buildings were built, including modern commercial buildings such as the Breuninger and the Eberhardsbau. During the demolition work, the artistically valuable components were collected and from 1905 stored in the western cloister of the former Dominican monastery near the Hospital Church, where grave monuments were already standing. This was the foundation of the first urban lapidarium.
The collection was not systematically indexed and properly looked after. There was neither an inventory list nor were the exhibits labeled, so that their urban historical significance was often incomprehensible.
Before the church was destroyed in 1944, two of the original four cloister wings were still preserved (east and west cloister). The cloister on the north wall of the Hospital Church had been torn down earlier and the exposed wall was supplemented by four high windows. Epitaphs and a Descent from the Cross were placed on the wall between the windows .
Johannes Reuchlin's epitaph from 1501 was on the left between the first and second window. It was brought to the municipal lapidarium after the Second World War (inventory number 24) and is now in the Leonhardskirche . The Descent from the Cross from 1518 was placed on the left between the second and third window and is now in the lapidary (inventory number 27).
New lapidary
On 12./13. September 1944, the hospital church including the cloisters was reduced to rubble in a devastating air raid. This seemed to seal the fate of the first urban lapidary. It is thanks to the tireless efforts of two men that the lapidary was resurrected:
- the journalist, monument conservator and city historian Gustav Wais (1883–1961)
- and the chief building officer and monument conservator Wilhelm Speidel (1887–1956).
Debris collection
In 1946, the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart, Arnulf Klett, first convened the Municipal Commission for the Preservation of Works of Art and Architectural Monuments ("Art Commission"), of which Gustav Wais was one of 25 members. In 1947 at the latest, the chairmanship of the commission was transferred to Gustav Wais. On his initiative, when the rubble was cleared in 1946 and 1947, building and art-historical components were recovered and collected. From 1948 onwards, Wais was supported by Wilhelm Speidel, the long-standing monument consultant at the municipal building department. He drew up a list of 1200 components worth preserving, with the aim of later making the collected remains of the Stuttgart past accessible to the public in a new lapidarium. The collection of rubble objects was increased to include works of art from Villa Berg (1949/1950) and other objects that had survived being relocated during the war in external locations.
Relics from the hospital church
Since there was no inventory of the old lapidary, it was not possible to account for the losses retrospectively. When in 1949 the rubble was cleared from the grounds of the Hospital Church, Gustav Wais and Otto Speidel set about an excavation, during which a considerable number of valuable fragments were recovered. This included Johannes Reuchlin's epitaph from 1501 (No. 24) and a Descent from the Cross from 1518 (No. 27), both of which could be reassembled from the fragments.
Start-up
In 1950 the city of Stuttgart acquired the Villa Ostertag-Siegle at Mörikestrasse 24 with the associated garden, in which the new lapidarium was to be set up. The Stuttgart industrialist Gustav Siegle had the villa built from 1886 to 1888 for his daughter Margarete (1867–1934) and her husband Carl von Ostertag-Siegle (1860–1924). After Gustav Siegle's death in 1905, the villa and garden passed into the possession of his son-in-law, who also took over his company empire. He had the garden laid out by the architects Albert Eitel and Eugen Steigleder based on the model of Italian terrace gardens from the Renaissance and placed his collection of Roman antiquities in the lower walkway. The Lapidarium was opened on July 8, 1950, offering a new home to the “stone witnesses of Stuttgart's architectural history” in a romantic, historical setting. The first director of the museum until his death in 1961 was Gustav Wais, who also cataloged the objects available at the time (No. 1-214) and coordinated the further expansion of the collection.
Sleeping Beauty
After the death of Gustav Wais in 1961, the garden sank into a deep slumber and overgrown. It was not until three decades later that the city remembered its treasure and had it thoroughly renovated. It is thanks to a well-functioning civic institution, the Friends of the Lapidarium , that the garden has been open to visitors since then, at least during the warm season.
In 1990 the Wais inventory was updated and documented taking account of disposals and additions. Damage for any later conservation measures was also systematically recorded.
Birch head
On the Birkenkopf , a mountain in the west of Stuttgart, part of the rubble from the Second World War was deposited in the 1950s . As a result, the mountain, popularly known as Monte Scherbelino , became an open-air lapidarium, on which many remains of former Stuttgart buildings can still be viewed, albeit in a disordered manner.
inventory
The lapidarium houses two collections:
- the actual lapidary collection with over 200 monuments from five centuries of Stuttgart's city history
- and Carl von Ostertag-Siegle's Roman collection of antiquities with almost 200 exhibits.
Lapidary collection
The inventory of the lapidary collection is numbered with the inventory numbers from 1-388. The inventory number can also be found on the notices attached to the exhibits.
The exhibits that were available in the lapidarium in 2006 are illustrated and described in the museum guide of the municipal lapidarium. Accordingly, there were 120 of the 214 objects that Gustav Wais had numbered and described in 1954 from 1–214. According to the museum guide, later additions were “entered in a separate access book at the city archive”. These are the objects with the numbers 215–388. Of these 174 numbers, 63 are occupied. According to the museum guide 2006, the inventory of the lapidary collection consisted of 183 inventory numbers. The following table summarizes the inventory figures again.
Period | Number from-to |
Number of numbers |
received numbers |
---|---|---|---|
until 1954 | 1-214 | 214 | 120 |
after 1954 | 215-388 | 174 | 63 |
2012 | 1-388 | 388 | 183 |
This inventory includes 22 unnumbered exhibits, so that the total inventory amounts to over 200 objects. The lack of exhibits is noticeable by jumps in the numbering. The museum guide gives the following reasons for the "departures" from the lapidary:
- Installation at the old location
- Loans to other institutions
- Storage for conservation reasons
- Disposal due to excessive destruction
- Transfer to the city archive .
After the first inventory of the exhibits by Gustav Wais, the inventory was re-recorded and documented in 1996 on behalf of the city archives by the art historian Axel Klumpp and the restorer Juliane Weigele .
Collection of antiquities
Gustav Wais described the collection of antiquities in 1954 from a list by Oscar Paret . In doing so, he introduced the numbering that was valid until now.
The inventory of the Antikensammlung is numbered with the inventory numbers from 1-215. Objects no. 1-182 are on the antique wall, except for the expired object no. 78. The inventory number is written on the wall next to the exhibits. There are also framed panels on the wall with explanations of inventory numbers 1-155. Of the remaining 34 objects no. 183-215, 15 have been preserved, so that the inventory comprises a total of 198 objects. The following table summarizes the inventory figures again.
Period | Number from-to |
Number of numbers |
received numbers |
---|---|---|---|
until 1954 | 1-215 | 215 | 214 |
2012 | 1-215 | 215 | 198 |
Literary traces
Three exhibits in the lapidarium relate to the works of the Württemberg poets Wilhelm Hauff and Eduard Mörike : the portal of the “Russian cobbler ”'s house, the portal of the“ King of England ”inn and a console figure from a market square.
Hauff's Russian cobbler
In the lively chat Free hours at the window , Wilhelm Hauff as the first-person narrator observes the hustle and bustle in the neighboring house from the window of his Stuttgart rented apartment. The “palace”, as Hauff's caretaker calls the house, belonged to the Russian shoemaker Rupfer, who had made money as a war profiteer during the “Russian era” through lucrative shoe deliveries to the Russians. In the municipal lapidary you can still see a portal (No. 142) of the house built in 1764, which has a cartouche with a boot, the guild mark of the shoemaker, above the arch . According to another source, Hauff should not have used the Russian shoemaker's house in Weinstrasse as a model, but rather the house of the baker Rupfer in Büchsenstrasse.
The inn "King of England" in Hauffs "The beggar from the Pont des Arts"
Wilhelm Hauff's story Die Bettlerin vom Pont des Arts is set in chapters 1-8 in 1824 mainly in two buildings in Stuttgart:
- in the Gasthof König von England in Dorotheenstrasse 2 (destroyed in World War II),
- and in the gallery of the Boisserée brothers in the officer's pavilion at Königstrasse 12 (demolished in 1914), where their famous collection of paintings was exhibited from 1819–1827.
In the gallery of the Boisserée brothers, the young Eberhard von Fröben and the Spaniard Don Pedro di San Montanjo Ligez meet in front of the painting of a lady by Lucas Cranach , both of whom are magically attracted by the painting because in the lady portrayed they once loved a woman believe to recognize. They get closer to each other and meet more often in the König von England inn , of which a portal is still preserved in the lapidary (No. 90). One day the Spaniard tells the young man about his unhappy love for Donna Laura de Tortosi , which he lost to someone else twenty years ago. The next day, Fröben wanted to reveal the story of his love, but the Spaniard had left surprisingly. On the estate of a friend near Kaub am Rhein, Fröben meets Josephe , the woman of his heart, whom he met as a beggar on the Pont des Arts in Paris and from whom an unfortunate fate had separated him. After many romantic and tragic entanglements, the two become a couple.
Mörikes Hutzelmannlein
At the Marktplatz 5 house, which was destroyed in 1944, two Gothic stone figures were attached to the corners facing the marketplace. One was a statue of St. Christopher standing on a console under a canopy. A goblin-like fellow with the four-part Württemberg ducal shield was leaning against the console. This figure was the model for the miraculous Hutzelmännlein in Eduard Mörike's Stuttgart Hutzelmännlein , who gives Seppe a pair of lucky shoes and an everlasting Hutzelbrot on his adventurous wandering. The Christophorus figure (No. 28) as well as the console (No. 16) and the canopy (No. 11) were in the municipal lapidarium in 1954, but are no longer there today.

Individual evidence
- ↑ Four bronze knight figures were attached to the four corner gables of the Old Town Hall in Stuttgart, built in 1905. They were removed when the town hall was rebuilt in 1951. Two are set up at the entrance of the municipal lapidarium, one is stored in the city archive and one has perished ( #Wais 1954.1 , page 93, no. 1). Heinz Fritz (1873–1927) also created the figure of the Stuttgardia , which also comes from the old town hall and was attached to the new town hall after a stopover in the lapidarium (corner of Marktplatz and Hirschstraße).
