Erich Haenel

Erich Haenel (born June 22, 1875 in Dresden ; † December 26, 1940 there ; full name: Erich Anton Haenel ) was a German art historian .

Scientific career

After obtaining his doctorate in 1898 at the University of Leipzig , he returned to Dresden and worked as an assistant to Cornelius Gurlitt at the Technical University of Dresden .

Haenel began his career at the museum in 1903 in the Dresden Historical Museum , of which he became director in 1913. In 1924 he also took over the management of the Green Vault , in 1937 that of the Münzkabinett and, in 1938, that of the Mathematical-Physical Salon .

From 1913 to 1928 he taught as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden , and was also the head of the library there from 1908.

His extensive work includes mainly publications on the weapons of the Dresden armory . He gained particular fame through the organization of important exhibitions ( August the Strong and His Time , 1933 in 40 rooms of the Dresden Residenzschloss) and the "revival" of historical tournament games in the Dresden Stallhof .

His grave is in the Inner Neustädter Friedhof in Dresden.
