A milestone was the erection of an extension by Wilfrid and Katharina Steib in 2002, which offers the graphic collection adequate space and the museum expanded exhibition space.

The collaboration with McKinsey & Company deserves special mention . Looking to optimize museum operations, Holst offered a pro bono study in autumn 1997 by Wilhelm Rall , director of the McKinsey office in Stuttgart . A McKinsey team under Luca Marighetti worked for and in the Staatsgalerie until mid-1998. The result became known as the “Stuttgart Awakening - Realignment of the State Gallery” throughout Germany and beyond. The museum also gained importance as a pilot office for testing new control elements.

This was also based on new activities such as B. the monthly “art nights”, the extended public relations and mediation work as well as the series of particularly successful exhibitions, such as on Gauguin , Grünewald , Pissarro , Manet , Picasso and others.

An intensified visitor orientation was particularly reflected in the number of members of the Stuttgart gallery association. The Staatsgalerie's circle of friends grew from a good 5,000 to just under 12,000 people in 2006, making it one of the largest in the German-speaking region.

In addition to issuing all of the Staatsgalerie's publications between 1994 and 2006, von Holst also took part directly in so-called public exhibitions. In 2000 he was responsible for the " Franz Marc - Horses" project and in 2006, together with Christofer Conrad, his farewell show " Claude Monet : Effet de soleil - Fields in Spring", which attracted over 260,000 visitors. This resulted in additional income of almost 1.6 million euros in 2006, which his successor Sean Rainbird was able to dispose of as impressive start-up capital.
