Paul Sauer (archivist)

Paul Sauer (born July 22, 1931 in Wolfsölden ; † July 17, 2010 in Stuttgart ) was a German historian and archivist.

Life

Raised in Wolfsölden, he received his doctorate in 1956 from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg with a thesis on the Württemberg Army from 1815 to 1871. He then worked at the Sigmaringen State Archives , the Karlsruhe General State Archives and at the Stuttgart Main State Archives for over 25 years . From 1986 until his retirement in 1996 he was in charge of the Stuttgart City Archives .

Paul Sauer wrote numerous books on the history of Baden-Württemberg and was considered one of its great connoisseurs. While working at the main state archive, he headed a working group that was supposed to clarify the fate of Jewish people from Baden and Württemberg during the Nazi era . He published the results in a six-volume documentary.
