Stanislava Jakševičiūtė-Venclauskienė

Stanislava Jakševičiūtė-Venclauskienė ( July 9, 1874 in Šiauliai - January 16, 1958 in Waterbury , Connecticut ) was a Lithuanian actress and director . As a foster mother , she raised more than a hundred orphans and homeless children. She also saved some Jewish men, women and children during the Shoah with the help of her daughters .

In 1995 she and her two daughters were recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations .

Life

She graduated from the girls' high school in Riga , joined the national movement and studied stage arts in Riga and St. Petersburg . In 1899 she was involved as a director and actress in the production of the Lithuanian comedy Amerika pirtyje by Juozas Vilkutaitis-Keturakis in Palanga . In 1902 she married the lawyer Kazimieras Venclauskis (1880-1940), the couple had two daughters, Gražbylė (1912-2017) and Danutė .

After the wedding, she lived with her husband in Riga for a few years , where she worked as a primary school teacher and performed plays for the Lithuanian residents. In 1908 she returned to her native Siauliai. There she performed at the Russian Theater Nikolaj Dolzhensk . She took in numerous orphaned children and young people in her home. In 1944 she left Lithuania, first lived in Germany and finally emigrated to the United States.
