Stanley (first name)
Stanley ( ˈstɛnli:) is a male given name and a family name . The short form is Stan .
etymology
The name Stanley comes from the Anglo-Saxon- speaking area of the 11th and 12th centuries, a contraction of the Old English words for stone (pronounced “stan”) and for willow or forest clearing (“leah” or “leigh”).
While the first dating of the surname Stanley goes back to the 12th century, the first name occurs increasingly from the 19th century.
A connection between the name Stanley and the Slavic name Stanislaus is often assumed. However, so far there is no evidence of this.
