Stanley refers to a contraction of the Old English words for stone (pronounced "stan") and for willow or forest clearing ("leah" or "leigh") from the Anglo-Saxon language area of the 11th or 12th century .
The first written mention of the surname was with Robert de Stanleya in the " Pipe Rolls of Staffordshire," which, during the reign of 1130 Henry I have been dated.
Family names gained in importance at this time, as precise records management became necessary with the introduction of the poll tax .
