Stanley George Payne (born September 9, 1934 in Denton , Texas ) is an American historian and Hispanist whose main research area is Spanish History .

Life

Stanley Payne received his PhD from Columbia University in 1960 and is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . He is also a member of the North American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of History since 1987.

His main research interests are v. a. the Spanish Civil War , the Second Spanish Republic, and Carlism and Fascism .

At the beginning of his work he had sympathy for the Spanish Republic, which is why his works were not allowed to be published in Spain during Francisco Franco's lifetime , over time he developed conservative positions and can now be clearly assigned to this spectrum.

The Spanish contemporary historian Santos Juliá (Catedrálico de Historia at the University of UNED and holder of the Premio Nacional de Historia) accused Payne in 2003 of discrediting himself with his recent turn to the circle of authors around Pío Moa, who is viewed by critics as the center of Spanish historical revisionism to have:

"The more recent research (note: on the civil war) has ... left the times of propaganda very far behind and replaced it with an adult and mature discourse from which Payne regrettably found himself with such disappointing work as the one he did in the Revista de Libros (note: this refers to the defense article on historical revisionism by Pío Moa) has himself excluded. "

Statements that Payne made at a historians' conference at Georgetown University in 2006, in which he spoke out in favor of the forced psychiatry of proponents of a republican form of government in Spain, because, according to Payne, these are dangerous in view of the historical events before 1936, attracted media attention in Spain and resulted in a parliamentary request from Izquierda Unida in the Congreso in Madrid, since Payne's support for persecution measures constituted an attack and a defamation of politically dissenters and a critical attitude towards the monarchist form of government was protected by the Spanish constitution as a basic democratic right to freedom of expression.

Regardless of this, Payne was honored for his life's work in November 2006 at a historians' congress of the conservative private university San Pedro-CEU on the Spanish Civil War, which he helped to organize. In 2009 he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order de Isabel la Católica .

Since 1997, Payne has been an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
