Stanley EG Hillman

Stanley Eric Gordon Hillman (born October 13, 1911 in Midhurst ; died August 16, 1995 in Lake Forest ) was a British-American businessman and manager. He was President of IC Industries from 1971 to 1977 and President of Conrail in 1989 .

Life

He was born to Percy Thomas Hillman and Margaret Fanny Lee and had a sister three years older than him. He attended the private Tonbridge School and then studied at the London School of Economics . He completed his military service in India.

From 1933 to 1947 he worked for the British American Tobacco Company, first in London and later in Shanghai . From 1943 to 1946 he was interned by the Japanese. In 1947 he moved to Hong Kong and started his own import-export business. In 1950 the family moved to Great Britain and in 1953 to Fort Worth , United States. There he started working for Convair ( General Dynamics ).

In 1957 he became an American citizen.

In 1962 he moved to the American Machine and Foundry conglomerate in Greenwich (Connecticut) . Here he was responsible for controlling the subsidiaries. From 1965 to 1967 he was employed by General American Transportation Corporation (GATX). Because of this, the family moved to Lake Forest. There he became the neighbor of William B. Johnson , Chairman of IC Industries . He brought him to his company in 1968. There he acted from 1971 to 1977 as President and Chief Operating Officer of the holding company IC Industries and from 1976 to 1978 as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad . During this time, the acquisition of Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers, Midas Muffler and Abex Industries and the marketing of the superstructure rights of the railway company in Chicago took place. In 1977 he retired.

In 1978 he was appointed liquidator by the bankruptcy judge for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad and their parent company Chicago Milwaukee Corporation . During this time he decided to shut down the section to the Pacific coast (Lines West). In 1979 he had to give up the job because of a stomach disease.

From February 12, 1989 to April 4, 1989 he was acting president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the Conrail railway company after the sudden death of Richard D. Sanborn . He sat on the supervisory board of this railway company from 1980 to 1990.

From 1977 until his death he also sat on the board of directors of Bandag Inc., a manufacturer and supplier of retreaded tires, as well as on the boards of SFN Companies ( Scott Foresman ) and Axia Inc.

He was married to May Irene Noon (1923-2010) since May 2, 1947. The couple had three daughters.
