Stanley Orme, Baron Orme

Stanley Orme, Baron Orme PC (* 5. April 1923 in Sale , Cheshire , † 27. April 2005 ) was a British politician of the Labor Party . He was a Member of the House of Commons from 1964 to 1997 and was Cabinet Minister in the 1970s.

life and career

Stan Orme was born in Sale , Cheshire . He attended a technical school, which he left in 1938 to become an apprentice instrument maker. In 1942 he joined the Royal Air Force . There he became a bomber navigator and served in Canada and Egypt . In 1947 he left the military as a warrant officer.

Orme joined the Labor Party in 1944 and became a Sale Borough Councilor in 1958 . As a staunch Bevanite , he welcomed many leftist goals, such as Movement for Colonial Freedom and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament .

He stood in the general election in 1959 for the first time for parliament in the constituency of Stockport South , where he was subject to the Conservative candidate. He was in the general election in 1964 for the constituency of Salford West to the House of Commons voted. When Labor returned to power in the February 1974 general election, Orme became Minister of State for Northern Ireland in Stormont . He made an impression in this position before joining the Department of Health and Social Security in March 1976. Prime Minister James Callaghan promoted him to cabinet in September 1976, where he sat with his superior David Ennals, Baron Ennals . Orme remained in this office until 1979.

In 1979 Orme joined the shadow cabinet as senior spokesman for health and social security, before later taking over the industrial and energy divisions until 1987. After constituency changes to the general election in 1983 , he was elected for the newly tailored constituency of Salford East . From 1987 to 1992 he was chairman of the Parliamentary Labor Party . In the general election in 1997 he retired.

On October 21, 1997, he was appointed Life Peer as Baron Orme of Salford in the County of Greater Manchester . He made several unsuccessful attempts to be elected to Labor's National Executive Committee .

Lord Orme died in 2005. His funeral at Dunham Crematorium was attended by many family members, friends and political colleagues. A memorial service was held in the House of Lords, with speeches from Neil Kinnock and Michael Foot . A very rare exception was made by Lord Chancellor as all divisions were suspended during this time.

He married Irene Mary Harris in 1951. They didn't have any children.
