geography
River course
The river has its source in the D'Aguilar Range near Landsborough , about 65 km north of Brisbane . From there it flows south-southwest and crosses under the D'Aguilar Highway at Durundur . At Kilcoy it turns its course to the south and forms Lake Somerset , which ensured the water supply for Brisbane for about 50 years until Lake Wivenhoe was built . About 7 km below the dam, the Stanley River flows into the Brisbane River .

history
Before the two reservoirs were built, the Stanley River and Brisbane Rivers were affected by frequent floods. Despite warnings from settler Henry Somerset , who had observed a flash flood in the upper reaches of the river, the floods of Black February 1893 caused widespread flooding in Brisbane and other cities, such as. B. Fernvale .
The river once formed the northwest boundary of what was formerly Stanley County .
Flora and fauna
The riparian forest vegetation around Lake Somerset has been almost completely removed. Today there is pastureland. On the upper reaches of the river the bushland is still almost intact, but biotope networks have been destroyed and fish in the river decimated.
The gastric breeder frogs are recently extinct frogs found only on the Mary River, the Mooloolah River and the Stanley River.
