history
John Oxley and Allan Cunningham named the watercourse, which they found in 1824, initially Bremer's Creek after Captain James Gordon Bremer , whose ship HMS Tamar was at that time carrying out contract voyages in the colony of New South Wales .
Before the completion of the Ipswich to Brisbane railroad in 1875, the river served as an important waterway between the two cities.
Water pollution
The river is prone to flooding and is considered to be heavily polluted. It does not get enough water from its tributaries to serve the needs of the people on its banks and at the same time to flush out dirt. Therefore, the water quality is poor and the water is very cloudy. There are many nutrients and bacteria in the river, especially when sewage and Ipswich's rain runoff come together. The natural riparian forest vegetation was almost completely removed, so that the river banks are now overgrown with weeds. On the lower reaches, the river suffers not only from the sewage discharged and floods from the agricultural areas, but also from the sewage from slaughterhouses.
In 2008, the annual water quality survey awarded the Bremer River level F, which is the worst possible. Heavy metals such as mercury, chromium, nickel and cadmium were found in the Warrill Creek tributary in 2009 . Sewage from RAAF Base Amberley was identified as the cause of the pollution . But they did not reach the Bremer River itself.
Water supply
The Lake Moogerah was on the upper reaches of the Reynolds Creek , a tributary of the Bremer River. The reservoir provides drinking water for cities like Boonah and irrigates grain fields and cattle pastures.
