Stantler (family)

The Stantler family (also Ständler or Stäntler ) was a family of blade smiths from Passau in the 15th - 17th centuries . The Stantlers built 1455-1647 blades for swords and sword .

They owned a house in Passau and a hammer workshop in Haibach in Lower Bavaria .

Their products were exported across Europe under the trademark Passauer Wolfsklingen . The symbol embossed in the blade represented a running wolf, a reference to the coat of arms of the Passau bishops ( Passau wolf ). Other trademarks were a crescent moon with a cross and the signature “Stantler”.

  • Ulrich, * around 1420, † 1486/87.
  • Michel * around 1460/65, † around 1520/25, Ulrich's son. Became a citizen and master craftsman in Passau in 1487.
  • Wolfgang (I), 1534 and 1557 mentioned in a document.
  • Wolfgang (II), * around 1552, † October 4, 1617.
  • Thomas * around 1580, † around 1650. Son of Wolfgang (II). Last verifiable blade smith of the family in Passau.

Blades from the Stantler's workshop are preserved in the Historical Museum in Dresden , in the Armory in Berlin , in the Army Museum in Paris , in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg and in the Museum Altes Zeughaus Solothurn .

A branch of the Passau line was also located in Munich . The Ständlerstraße in Munich reminiscent of the blacksmith family .
