The Starry Metropolis is a cruise ship sailing under the flag of Jamaica , which was put into service in 1976 as a ferry under the name Kareliya for the Soviet Black Sea Shipping Company . After several changes of ownership and renaming, the ship has been in service for casino cruises off Hong Kong since 2004 .

Planning and construction

The Kareliya was built as one of five identical ferries at Oy Wärtsilä AB in Turku . Her sister ships are the Azerbaihzan (today Enchanted Capri ), Belorussiya (today Delphin ), Gruziya (today Salamis Filoxenia ) and the Kazakhstan (most recently in service as Island Adventure , broken up in Alang in 2012 ). The Kareliya could carry up to 1009 passengers in 504 cabins and 256 cars. The ship was from the 14 April 1976 stack left.

period of service

Kareliya and Leonid Brezhnev

The Kareliya outside Hamburg, May 1992

The Kareliya was delivered to the Black Sea Shipping Company in December 1976 and could be used both as a ferry and for cruises . The ship's home port was Odessa .

On June 1, 1981, the Kareliya ran aground during a cruise off Arrecife and had to be evacuated. On July 30, the ship arrived in Tyne for repairs , where it was also modernized and converted into a pure cruise ship.

In December 1982 the name of the ship was changed to Leonid Brezhnev . In 1989 it got its original name again. The Kareliya remained in service for another eight years before she was arrested in Nouméa on March 17, 1997 due to outstanding payment claims by the shipping company .

Olvia

The new owner was Kaalbye Shipping International, based in Monrovia , in May 1998 , who renamed the ship Olvia . It was still used for cruises and was also chartered by the Peace Boat aid organization, among others . In 2001, Panama- based K&O Shipping became the owner of the ship.

Neptune and CT Neptune

The Neptune off Hong Kong, June 2009

In December 2004 the Olvia was renamed Neptune in order to be used as a casino ship off Hong Kong in the future. From April 2005 to February 2006 the ship, which has meanwhile been sold to Walden Maritime SA, was called CT Neptune before it was used by Neptune Cruises for casino cruises in Hong Kong from March 2006 .

Starry Metropolis

In July 2011, Walden Maritime sold the ship to China International. It was renamed Starry Metropolis and has been used by the Metropolis Cruise company ever since. The Starry Metropolis can carry up to 650 passengers. In addition to the on-board casino, the ship's equipment includes several restaurants, a night club, an event hall and a KTV lounge .
