The statue of Gustav III. is a bronze statue of the Swedish King Gustav III. in the Gamla Stan district of Stockholm .

location

The statue stands in the immediate vicinity of the royal castle on the northern part of the Skeppsbron , the quay in Stockholm's old town, opposite the confluence of the Slottsbacken .

history

The monument was commissioned by the city of Stockholm and is considered the last great work by the Swedish sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel . The initiative for its establishment was still from Gustav III. gone out myself. It was ordered in 1790 on the basis of a design drawing by Sergel. A first scaled down plaster model from 1791 is in the Stockholm National Museum . The (not preserved) plaster model in original size was completed in 1793, the casting of the bronze statue took place in 1799. The statue was erected in 1808. In 2007 the monument was restored.

layout

The monument consists of a bronze sculpture of the striding king in full figure on a high pedestal made of Älvdalen porphyry . She captures the moment when Gustav III. goes ashore triumphantly after the victorious Russo-Swedish War (1788–1790) . The memorial was erected on the spot where he returned home. The figure of the king wears a naval uniform with a field bandage and sword as well as a wide cloak closed over the left shoulder. In her left hand, which is leaning on the rudder of a ship, she holds a laurel wreath as a sign of victory and in the outstretched right hand an olive branch as a symbol of peace . For the posture of the figure, Sergel was inspired by the ancient sculpture of Apollo von Belvedere .

The base bears the inscription in Swedish :

ÅT
KONUNG GUSTAF III
LAGSTIFTARE
SEGERVINNARE
FREDENS ÅTERSTÄLLARE
AF
STOCKHOLMS BORGERSKAP
MDCCXC
(King Gustav III, legislator, victor, restorer of peace, from Stockholm's citizenship 1790)
