The monument stands on the place where, according to tradition, György Dózsa ( Romanian Gheorghe Doja ), the leader of the Hungarian peasant uprising of 1514, was executed. The peasant king was placed on a red-hot iron chair, and a crown was placed on him and a scepter was handed out, both also glowing red. His body was quartered and displayed in Hungarian cities. Originally, a statue of Mary was mounted on a pole at this point in memory of this apparition , which was replaced in 1837 with a larger wooden image of the saint. In 1865 a stone statue from Bavaria was erected at this point, which was replaced in 1877 by another statue donated by the poor school sisters Notre Dame .
